In an exclusive interview, Joshua Jackson has opened up about his feelings regarding the recent cancellation of ABC’s Doctor Odyssey after just one season, expressing that he is “bummed out” about the show’s abrupt end.
The series, which premiered in September 2024 and concluded its run in May 2025, featured Jackson in the role of Dr. Max Bankman, a charming and dedicated physician aboard the luxury cruise ship The Odyssey.
Alongside him were talented co-stars Phillipa Soo as Nurse Avery Morgan, Sean Teale as Nurse Tristan Silva, and Don Johnson as Captain Robert Massey, creating a dynamic ensemble that resonated with viewers.
Reflecting on the experience, the 47-year-old actor shared, “I really, really enjoyed the experience,” emphasizing the camaraderie he developed with his castmates.
Jackson expressed his fondness for the group, stating, “I’m going to miss the gang for sure,” highlighting the close-knit relationships formed during filming.
Fans of the show were treated to a unique blend of drama and comedy, with Jackson describing it as “a beautiful, over-the-top kind of experience that was like nothing else on television.”

The cancellation came as a surprise to many, particularly since the show had garnered a dedicated fanbase.
Jackson noted that the decision was ultimately out of their hands, saying, “This is a crazy and difficult business, and whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don’t actually tell us those things.”
The show was effectively canceled when the cast’s contracts expired on June 30, leading to speculation about its future.
Jackson remarked, “They may make that show with somebody else,” acknowledging the possibility of a reboot or recasting, though he admitted, “I am not holding my breath that it’s coming back.”
Doctor Odyssey was notable not just for its engaging storylines but also for its impressive lineup of guest stars, including country music icons Shania Twain and Kelsea Ballerini, as well as Glee alum Chord Overstreet and Showgirls star Gina Gershon.
The series even featured a crossover with Angela Bassett’s character from 9-1-1, further elevating its profile.
Jackson praised the show’s co-creator, Ryan Murphy, for his visionary approach to storytelling and his ability to assemble such a talented cast and crew.
“He dreams up incredible worlds, and he puts together great teams, both in front of the camera and behind the camera,” Jackson said, expressing confidence that everyone involved would land on their feet despite the cancellation.

As fans mourn the loss of Doctor Odyssey, Jackson took a moment to address them directly, saying, “I hope they got the same thing that we got out of it,” underscoring the shared joy and creativity that defined their time together.
He expressed sadness over the show’s conclusion but also gratitude for the time spent with his colleagues, stating, “It’s a bummer we don’t get to do it again, but I really enjoyed the time that we did get to do it.”
In the wake of the cancellation, questions loom about what lies ahead for Jackson and his fellow cast members.
With the television landscape constantly evolving, there is always the potential for new opportunities to arise.
As the industry continues to shift, fans are left wondering if Doctor Odyssey might find a new life elsewhere or if Jackson will embark on a different project that showcases his talents.

For now, Jackson’s heartfelt sentiments reflect not only his personal disappointment but also the collective feelings of a cast and crew who poured their hearts into a show that resonated with many.
As the entertainment world moves forward, the legacy of Doctor Odyssey may endure in the hearts of its fans and the memories of its cast, leaving an indelible mark on the television landscape.
