At 80, Jimmy Page Just Revealed What We All Feared: The Untold Darkness Behind the Guitar Legend
Jimmy Page is a name that resonates through the annals of rock history.
A legendary guitarist, twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his riffs have shaped the soundscape of generations.
Yet, as he reaches the age of 80, Page has finally revealed the dark truths that many suspected but few dared to confront.
Behind the iconic music and the glowing stage lights lies a story filled with mystery, obsession, addiction, and a lifelong battle with forces far beyond the ordinary.
The story begins when Jimmy Page was just a boy of 12.
His family had recently moved, and in an abandoned roadhouse near their new home, he stumbled upon a Spanish guitar.
The guitar was in an almost pristine condition, yet no one could explain how it came to be there or who it belonged to.
No previous owners stepped forward, no family friends claimed it, and the mystery of the guitar’s origins remained unsolved.
Some have speculated that this encounter with the mysterious instrument was no mere coincidence but the first sign of a destiny intertwined with the unknown.
Had it not been for that abandoned guitar, Page might never have developed his passion for music.
Intrigued and alone, he began to teach himself, practicing tirelessly.
This solitary beginning was the spark that ignited a journey destined for greatness — but also one shadowed by secrets darker than his fans could imagine.
In his youth, Jimmy Page played in numerous bands, yet many of these early ventures collapsed.
His life felt fragmented, and at times, he doubted whether music was truly his path.
He once confided to a friend that he wanted to find a cure for cancer rather than pursue a career in music.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Page chose to continue his education while honing his guitar skills, a testament to his complex and thoughtful nature.
At the age of 15, a pivotal moment occurred.
While browsing in an English library, Page came across a small, peculiar book titled Magic in Theory and Practice by Aleister Crowley, the infamous English occultist.
Reading it was a revelation — Page described the experience as something that “just clicked.
His first thought was, “Yes, that’s it.
My thing.
I found it.
This marked the beginning of a lifelong fascination with Crowley’s writings and the occult, a path that would alienate some fans and Christian audiences who saw these interests as sinister or satanic.
Following this discovery, Jimmy Page’s musical career took a dramatic upswing.
He became a founding member of Led Zeppelin, a band that would become legendary not only for their music but also for the controversies surrounding them.
Led Zeppelin was often described as a band of “diabolically bad people who were satanically good” performers.
From 1968 to 1980, they released a string of albums that redefined rock music and captivated millions.
One of the most striking examples of Page’s occult influence was Led Zeppelin’s fourth album.
The album cover featured four enigmatic symbols, each representing a band member.
Page’s symbol, known as “Zoso,” is linked to astrology and alchemy, originating from a 14th-century alchemical manuscript by Gerolamo Cardano.
During the album’s tour, Page wore outfits adorned with this symbol and others representing his astrological signs: Capricorn Sun, Scorpio Ascendant, and Cancer Moon.
His famous dragon suit was embroidered with these signs, symbolizing his deep connection to mysticism.
The album’s artwork also included a painting inspired by the tarot card The Hermit.
Though attributed to an unknown artist, suspicions arose that Page himself created the piece.
He even portrayed The Hermit character in a fantasy sequence in Led Zeppelin’s concert film The Song Remains the Same.
But Page’s fascination with the occult extended beyond symbolism.
In the 1970s, he opened an occult bookshop and publishing house named The Equinox.
Frustrated by the lack of bookstores offering serious occult literature in London, he sought to create a hub for like-minded seekers.
Under his guidance, the shop published two books, including a facsimile of Crowley’s 1904 edition of The Gaea and Astrology: A Cosmic Science by Isabelle Hickey.
Though the shop eventually failed, Page insisted it was meant to be a nucleus for something greater — though what exactly remains a mystery.
Throughout this time, Page immersed himself in Crowley’s philosophy, treating it as a personal gospel.
He believed Crowley was a misunderstood genius and integrated his teachings into his daily life.
In interviews, Page emphasized the importance of discovering one’s free will and true self, advocating for living without suppression or frustration.
His occult interests also led to collaboration with underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger, another Crowley devotee.
Page was tasked with composing music for Anger’s film Lucifer Rising.
He produced 23 minutes of music but was later accused by Anger of failing to do justice to the project, blaming Page’s drug addiction for his shortcomings.
Indeed, drugs played a significant role in Page’s life.
During Led Zeppelin’s peak, he was a heavy user and openly admitted it.
He described drugs as “an integral part of the whole thing” from start to finish.
Substances were frequently consumed on tour, especially during the 1973 North American tour, which Page later said wiped much of his memory.
His heroin addiction began around 1975 during the recording of the album Presence.
Band manager Richard Cole confirmed Page’s addiction, a truth many feared.
By the time the next tour started, his drug use severely affected his performances.
He lost significant weight, worried friends and family, and became distant from the band.
His absences from the studio grew longer, contributing to Led Zeppelin’s gradual decline.
After the band disbanded in 1980, Page claimed to have overcome his addiction.
However, his struggles continued.
He was arrested twice for drug possession in 1982 and 1984.
Thanks to his fame, the consequences were minimal — a conditional discharge and a fine.
Still, these incidents added complexity to his public image.
Despite his association with drugs, Page disliked being labeled an addict.
In a 1988 interview, he was offended when an interviewer linked his name with drug use, insisting he did not look or act like a “smack addict.
”
By 2003, however, his stance softened.
He told Q Magazine he did not regret his drug use, believing it helped him focus during critical recording sessions.
He pointed out that albums like Presence and In Through the Out Door were recorded in just three weeks — a feat requiring intense concentration.
Jimmy Page’s story forces us to confront difficult questions.
Was his drug use a necessary evil fueling his genius?
Was his obsession with the occult a genuine spiritual quest or a fascination with the forbidden?
Or was he simply a product of his time, navigating the excesses and pressures of rock stardom?
Whatever the answers, Jimmy Page remains a complex and compelling figure.
A musical genius whose life was marked by brilliance and darkness alike.
His legacy is not only the timeless music he created but the human story behind the legend.
A story of mystery, obsession, addiction, and survival.
At 80, Jimmy Page has finally revealed what many feared — the man behind the guitar was as haunted and enigmatic as the music he created.
His revelations invite us to look beyond the riffs and spotlight, to understand the depth of the man who changed rock forever.
