While The Talented Mr. Ripley was a great success and was nominated for five Academy Awards, The Beach failed miserably at the box office and received negative reviews from critics.

Indeed, it must be heartbreaking for DiCaprio to know that his chosen film failed, while the film he rejected left an unforgettable impact on the audience.

Since DiCaprio turned down the role, it eventually went to Matt Damon who won various accolades for his performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley.
