In the upcoming Charlie Sheen documentary from Netflix, aka Charlie Sheen, the actor exposes his wild tales, ugly scandals, and the unimaginable aspects of his larger-than-life… well, life. One of those mad stories that finds its way into the doc is of how Sheen flew a commercial plane on the way to his honeymoon.
Director Andrew Renzi revealed the story in an interview with Deadline while also explaining how it pertained to Sheen’s legacy:
That to me felt like the most Charlie Sheen in a nutshell that I could have possibly imagined. Here’s a guy who’s just married, on his honeymoon, drunk off his ass, and being given the steering wheel to a plane with 400 people behind him. That sort of power and mind f**k can’t be quantified by anyone else in the world.
[Note: According to Sheen’s own account of the story, it was close to 300 passengers, not 400.]
The documentary has many more such interesting anecdotes and tidbits about the actor’s life, and is a carefully constructed account of Sheen’s life, as seen through Renzi’s lens, as opposed to the wild and chaotic persona built up by the tabloids over the past decades.

In the Netflix documentary titled aka Charlie Sheen, the actor relives one of his most unreal moments as a celebrity. On his way to his honeymoon with his first wife, Donna Peele, the actor came face-to-face with the flight’s navigator after getting drunk. Soon after, he was in the cockpit taking photos with the Captain, his fan, and managed to talk him into sitting at the controls.
Here’s a peek into the airplane story and never-before-heard details of what really went down behind the scenes, straight from the horse’s mouth.
I just rested my hands on the controls. And I said… “So is George [code for autopilot] still flying the plane?” And the co-pilot flicks a switch and says, “Not anymore.” I’m sitting there thinking, “F**k.” I’m there, drunk, close to 300 people asleep behind me, an angry bride 20 feet behind me, and I start guiding this plane. And this just perfect magical flying machine responded in a way that I cannot put into words.
Charlie Sheen’s extraordinary experience still brings a spark of old nostalgia and joy in his eyes and voice as he sits in a booth recounting his story 30 years later.
Charlie Sheen’s Legacy Gets Established With 1 Netflix Documentary
Andrew Renzi couldn’t have chosen a better subject for his documentary after his 2022 Netflix docuseries titled Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?
Charlie Sheen’s life is a kaleidoscopic blend of highs and lows in the most literal sense, and no other child of the industry would make for a more interesting subject than the Two and a Half Men star.
After spending much of his life under public and media scrutiny and spending the rest getting in and out of rehab, Sheen is now letting it all out in the open for the fans to dissect. Renzi, in the same Deadline conversation, claims:
This is the Charlie Sheen documentary, and there probably can’t be another one… [Sheen] had no editorial control over this thing, but he’s able to look at it and say, “all right, good, bad, all the things. This is an honest portrait of me that I feel like was representative of my POV, which was what I chose to do.”
With the documentary divided into two parts, Part One delves into a “romanticized version of what drug addiction can look like to a drug addict.” Part Two explores the fall and the aftermath, and explores “what it actually looks like to be in the depths of addiction.”
Renzi both wanted to hold up as well as dismantle the iconography of Charlie Sheen, although it’s difficult to say which one he succeeds at doing more of.
