During red zone drills, tight end Gerald Everett took a low hit from safety Alohi Gilman that left him slow to get up.

Though Everett returned to practice shortly after, Harbaugh briefly pulled Gilman aside for a one-on-one talk that observers say “looked more disciplinary than instructional. ”

Injuries are always the elephant in the room during padded practices, and the Chargers aren’t taking any chances.

Several starters were on pitch counts, and trainers kept a close eye on players returning from rehab.

Still, the all-out energy meant that nobody—not even the biggest names—was immune from contact.

Justin Herbert, in his red non-contact jersey, was nearly caught up in a pocket collapse and had to scramble away before a rookie defensive tackle accidentally bumped him from behind.

That single moment prompted an immediate whistle and a ten-minute pause while coaches reset tempo and players were reminded of boundaries.

But it wasn’t just tension and near-fights that defined the practice.

And second-year running back Isaiah Spiller looked faster, stronger, and more decisive than at any point last season.

Still, all of it—the flashes of brilliance, the aggressive clashes, the raised voices from both players and coaches—pointed to one unmistakable theme: the Chargers are tired of being an underperforming roster on paper.

There’s a sense of urgency, of pride, of unfinished business.

And for a team that has been accused in years past of being “soft” or “inconsistent,” this new edge might be exactly what they need.
