Norm Abram: The Master Carpenter Who Built More Than Just Furniture—Where Is He Now?
Born in October 1949, Norm Abram has become a household name in the world of carpentry and home improvement.
Best known for his work on “This Old House” and “The New Yankee Workshop,” Norm’s journey into the world of woodworking began at a young age, thanks to his father, who instilled in him a love for the craft.

Growing up in Massachusetts, Norm’s first experience with carpentry came at the tender age of nine when he helped his father install hardwood floors for a client.
This early exposure laid the groundwork for a lifetime of dedication to woodworking.
After high school, Norm initially pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst but soon realized that hands-on work was more fulfilling than theoretical studies.
He switched his major to business administration before ultimately dropping out just shy of graduation to follow his passion for carpentry.
Norm quickly found success in the construction industry, working for a prestigious New England-based firm where he was promoted to site supervisor by the age of 27.
In 1976, he founded his own general contracting company, Integrated Structures Inc., which operated for over a decade.
His first significant independent project was building a general store in Nantucket, marking the beginning of a fruitful career as an entrepreneur in the woodworking field.
In 1980, Norm’s life took a pivotal turn when he was hired to build a small workshop garage in the backyard of television producer Russell Morash.
Impressed by Norm’s efficient work ethic, Russell invited him to assist in renovating a Victorian house in Dorchester, Massachusetts, which would become the pilot episode of “This Old House.”
From that moment on, Norm became a staple on the show, inspiring countless viewers with his approachable teaching style and expert craftsmanship.

“This Old House” has since evolved into a vast media brand, encompassing a magazine, website, and television series that continues to air weekly on PBS.
The show has undergone changes over the years, with various cast members coming and going, but Norm has remained a constant presence, sharing his knowledge and skills with viewers.
In addition to his role on “This Old House,” Norm hosted “The New Yankee Workshop,” which premiered in 1989.
This spin-off focused solely on woodworking, showcasing projects that ranged from simple furniture to complex cabinetry, all crafted using a blend of traditional and modern techniques.
The show enjoyed an impressive 21-season run before being suspended indefinitely in 2009, allowing Norm to focus on other endeavors.
Despite his busy filming schedule, Norm has always found time for various commitments.
He serves on the board of trustees for Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts and has delivered commencement speeches at prestigious institutions, including Boston’s North Bennett Street School, known for its craftsmanship training.
Norm has also been involved in apprenticeship programs aimed at training the next generation of builders.

Over the years, Norm has lent his voice to various projects, including animated shows and commercials, showcasing his versatility beyond woodworking.
He is known for his calm demeanor, meticulous approach to teaching, and commitment to safety—often reminding viewers to wear protective gear and focus on their tasks.
In 2009, Norm received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s ISMART Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to preventing eye injuries and promoting safety in woodworking.
He was also honored with the Ken Burns Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for his significant impact on the arts and craftsmanship.
As of 2022, Norm has continued to pursue his passion for woodworking.
He recently purchased a property in Rhode Island, which he plans to convert into a woodworking shop.
Additionally, he has expressed interest in learning shipbuilding, further expanding his skills and knowledge in the craft.

While there were rumors about Norm’s health in mid-2021, he has yet to confirm or deny any such claims.
However, he is believed to be in good health and continues to enjoy a fulfilling life with his wife, Elise, a skilled potter.
The couple resides in a modified colonial home in Carlisle, Massachusetts, which Norm built with the help of professionals, including his father.
Norm and Elise enjoy a quiet life, engaging in activities such as kayaking, fishing, and visiting art galleries.
They prefer to keep their personal lives private, avoiding the spotlight despite Norm’s fame.
He has often mentioned how, when recognized by fans, he makes a point to acknowledge his daughter Lindsay, ensuring she feels included in the conversation.

In summary, Norm Abram remains a beloved figure in the world of woodworking, inspiring generations of carpenters and DIY enthusiasts.
His journey from a young boy helping his father to a master carpenter and television personality has left an indelible mark on the craft.
As he continues to explore new projects and teach others, Norm’s legacy as a dedicated craftsman and educator will undoubtedly endure for years to come.
