In a shocking development, Donnell Russell, the former manager of R. Kelly, has been charged with making a threatening phone call to a New York City theater.
This call was aimed at disrupting the screening of the docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly,” which includes serious allegations against the singer regarding s*xual abuse of minors and adult women.
Federal prosecutors from the U.S.Attorney’s Office in Manhattan allege that Russell made this threat in December 2018.
He reportedly called the NeueHouse Madison Square theater, claiming that there was an armed individual ready to start shooting as the screening was about to commence.

At the time of the call, Russell was in Chicago.
He is accused of making at least six additional phone calls to various New York Police Department precincts, the Fire Department of New York headquarters, and a historical organization linked to the fire department, all in an apparent attempt to disrupt the screening.
According to an FBI affidavit, these actions were taken after Russell’s earlier attempts to halt the screening through a cease-and-desist letter were unsuccessful.
The gravity of the situation is underscored by the fact that Russell has been charged with one count of threatening physical harm by interstate communication and one count of conspiracy to threaten physical harm by interstate communication.
Russell made his initial appearance in federal court on Friday, where a judge ordered his release on a $75,000 bail.
However, this release comes with strict conditions, including a prohibition against contacting any co-conspirators, co-defendants, witnesses, or victims and their families involved in the case.
A preliminary hearing for Russell is scheduled for September 14, as court records indicate.
CNN has reached out to Russell’s attorney for comments on the charges, but no response has been received as of yet.
“Surviving R. Kelly” is a six-hour docuseries that aired on Lifetime beginning January 3, 2019.
The series garnered significant attention, drawing in 26 million viewers and reigniting public interest in the allegations of s*xual misconduct against the singer.
The recent charges against Russell are not the only legal troubles he faces.
Just days prior, he was charged in Brooklyn for allegedly threatening to disclose s*xually explicit photographs of a victim, identified as Jane Doe, if she did not retract her lawsuit against Kelly.
Notably, Russell did not appear in court for those charges.
R. Kelly, who is currently facing federal charges of racketeering and s*x trafficking in New York, is being held without bond in a federal prison in Chicago while awaiting trial on these serious charges.
He has consistently denied all allegations made against him.
Steve Greenberg, Kelly’s attorney, has publicly denied any involvement or knowledge on Kelly’s part regarding the threats made by Russell.
Greenberg stated, “These people are fans of R. Kelly and if they decide to do something because in their judgment they think it would help, it doesn’t mean that R. Kelly asked them, encouraged them, or even knew they were doing it.

Greenberg expressed concern that prosecutors might be using undue leverage to compel people to cooperate with their investigation.
This statement reflects the ongoing tension between Kelly’s legal team and the prosecution as they navigate the complex web of allegations surrounding the singer.
In December 2018, CNN reported that a screening of “Surviving R. Kelly” had to be evacuated after an unknown caller threatened that someone would start shooting if the film continued to play.
The theater spokesperson later indicated that the threats were deemed noncredible.
Dream Hampton, the executive producer of the docuseries, remarked at the time that the threat appeared to be an attempt to intimidate and silence Kelly’s accusers.
She stated, “Calling in a noncredible threat to the NYPD to interrupt our screening is an act of desperation from people who don’t want these truths shared with the world.
Investigators have been scrutinizing Russell’s alleged involvement in the phone threats linked to the docuseries screening since January 2019.
An FBI affidavit unsealed recently reveals that during an interview with the FBI in August 2019, Russell acknowledged sending a cease-and-desist letter to the theater but denied making the threatening call.
The affidavit also claims that a search of Russell’s iCloud account uncovered a recording of another individual associated with Kelly, who stated, “Don [Russell] got identified as the person who called in the fing gun threat which was stupid as f and Rob didn’t know sh*t about it… they said the NYPD traced it back to him.

This recording adds a layer of complexity to the case, suggesting that Russell’s actions may have been perceived as reckless and without Kelly’s knowledge.
Furthermore, on the night of the alleged threat against the theater, Russell’s mother sent him a text message advising him to be humble when speaking to Kelly, indicating that Russell’s actions might not align with Kelly’s wishes.
The reference to “Rob” in the text is understood to be a nickname for R. Kelly, whose birth name is Robert.
This familial communication hints at the potential friction between Russell’s decisions and the expectations of Kelly’s inner circle.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it is essential to consider the broader implications of these charges.
The allegations against Russell not only highlight the lengths to which individuals may go to protect their interests but also underscore the ongoing discourse surrounding accountability and the culture of silence that often surrounds cases of s*xual abuse.
R. Kelly’s trial in New York is scheduled to commence in September, although it may face delays due to ongoing concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.
A status conference for the case is set for Wednesday, as indicated in court records.
The unfolding legal battles surrounding R. Kelly and his associates serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in high-profile cases.
They raise critical questions about the intersection of fame, power, and the pursuit of justice in a landscape where public opinion can heavily influence legal outcomes.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the courts will navigate these intricate issues.
The charges against Russell serve as a stark reminder of the serious consequences that can arise from actions taken in defense of a celebrity accused of heinous crimes.
In conclusion, the case against Donnell Russell is emblematic of the challenges faced by those entangled in the web of R. Kelly’s legal troubles.
As the legal system grapples with these issues, the hope for justice for the victims of s*xual abuse remains a paramount concern.
The upcoming hearings and trials will undoubtedly attract significant media attention, reflecting society’s ongoing struggle to confront and address these critical issues head-on.
