Saturday night was a disaster for the post-Jon Jones heavyweight division.

Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall: Heavyweight Title Showdown This Summer | MMA UK

Tom Aspinall not being able to continue has been debated in the aftermath of the main event of UFC 321.

His first defense of the undisputed heavyweight title came to a disappointing end in the first round after he was poked in both eyes by Ciryl Gane.

The severity of the pokes is clear to see in Aspinall’s worrying comments from the hospital that he was immediately taken to after leaving the Octagon.

One fighter that was always going to comment on the unsatisfying outcome was the last man to successfully defend the heavyweight title.

Following the months of back and forth between the two men that didn’t result in them sharing the Octagon with one another, Jon Jones will have been watching Tom Aspinall’s next fight closely.

Many believed that the Brit’s fight with Ciryl Gane, who Jones defeated in just over two minutes in 2023, would instantly be measured against the former champion’s win.

Jones’ first reaction to the UFC 321 main event came in the form of a change to his social media profile picture, where he added an eyepatch to the duck icon that he has used in recent months.

The consensus greatest of all time commented on the fight for a second time by sharing someone else’s post rather than putting out his own.

Via his Instagram story, Jones shared a graphic that compared the time it took for him to beat Gane next to the length of Saturday night’s headliner before it was ruled a no contest.

The post that ‘Bones’ shared came with the caption, “Never forget who the GOAT is.”
