In a recent interview, actor Sean Penn denied rumors that he used a baseball bat to beat his ex-wife Madonna in 1987.

“A SWAT team came to my house,” Oscar-winner Sean Penn told The New York Times in a June 22 article about the alleged assault on his ex-wife  Madonna .

SWAT is an elite tactical unit in law enforcement agencies. They are trained to carry out high-risk operations that are beyond the capabilities of regular police forces.

“I said, ‘I’m not going out. I’m almost done with my breakfast.’ But the windows around the house were smashed and they came in. They handcuffed me,” Sean Penn  recalled.

Sean eventually learned that the police had received a tip that he had “hanged Madonna like a turkey,” a phrase he admitted he didn’t even understand.

The Mystic River star then began dating another woman, who often confronted him about the assault. 

Sean Penn and Madonna, 65, had a tumultuous marriage that lasted from 1985 to 1989.

However, in 2015, the “queen of pop” defended her ex-husband, saying that allegations that Penn beat her during their marriage were “absolutely outrageous, malicious and false.”

“While we certainly had our fair share of heated arguments, Sean never hit me, tied me up, or physically assaulted me,” she added, calling the Bad Boys actor a “caring, compassionate person.”

In 2016, Lee Daniels, the director of the TV series Empire, apologized and retracted a statement he made in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter calling Sean Penn a “wife beater.” Lee’s public apology was part of a settlement in Sean Penn’s $10 million defamation lawsuit against the filmmaker.

“I am sorry for hurting you Sean. I apologize and retract my reckless statements about you,” Daniels said in a statement at the time.

In response at the time, Penn said: “I accept Lee’s sincere apology and appreciate the sincerity.”

As part of the case, Madonna submitted a sworn statement to the court, denying rumors that Sean Penn beat her with a cane while they were living together.

After the singer and actor separated, Penn married Robin Wright in 1996. They had daughter Dylan Penn (now 33) and son Hopper Penn (now 30) together before divorcing in 2010.

Sean got married for the third time, living with Leila George from 2020 to 2022.

Meanwhile, Madonna married Guy Ritchie in 2000. They have two sons together: Rocco Ritchie (23 years old) and David Banda (18 years old). The two split in 2008.

Grammy Award-winning singer Madonna is also the mother of daughter Lourdes Leon (27 years old) with ex-boyfriend Carlos Leon and 3 daughters she adopted when she was single: Mercy James (18 years old), twins Stella and Estere Ciccone (11 years old)..
