Anger rumbles over Madonna reportedly planning to throw a ‘Pompeii party’

Madonna is reportedly planning a “Pompeii party” at the site ruins on Friday, Aug. 16, and historians are not happy about it. Rumors have been circulating that the Queen of Pop is planning to throw a dinner party for her 66th birthday and the news is already getting strong reactions from people in Italy.

The “Material Girl” singer has reportedly rented out the Large Theatre, the 2,200-year-old amphitheater at Pompeii that now hosts drama and music performances for birthday bash.

The Times (London) is reporting that the American events company paid around $30,000 to book the venue. The price tag has also infuriated some Italians who believe she is paying too little to use the historic space.

Italian publications are reporting that 500 guests have been invited and are expected to attend, including Katy Perry and her fiancé Orlando Bloom. No word if the park will be closed off to the public on the day of the party.

Madonna, whose birthday is on Aug. 16, is setting out to have an all-out Italian celebration and is reportedly aboard a private yacht that is expected to make stops in Naples and Capri. The “Like a Virgin” singer was recently spotted with her son Rocco, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Sunday, Aug. 11. They are then headed to Pompeii for the festivities.

Mayor of Pompei Carmine Lo Sapio shared that he had already been informed about the event and expressed enthusiasm about the pop star’s arrival. “We are ready to welcome the singer,” he said, according to La Repubblica.

The Roman town was destroyed when the Vesuvius volcano erupted in 79AD, so some people are against its usage. Michele Campisi, general secretary of the Italia Nostra Heritage Association, shared her thoughts about the party in The Times.

“Why does Madonna need to go to Pompeii? Is there not a more beautiful beach she could use? €30,000 is absurd. It’s like giving Pompeii away,” he reportedly said, adding that the city does not benefit from publicity since it already boasts millions of visitors per year. Michele added that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government had been “aggressively cashing in on culture,” by allowing public figures and influencers to rent out historic sites for private events.

The Culture Ministry reportedly released new guidelines earlier this year to establish how much it should cost to rent out heritage sites based on their importance and the kind of monuments at each site.
