Although Dennis Rodman did not change partners as often as he changed hair colors, Rodman’s romantic relationships were as colorful as his hairstyles.
The two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year winner got married four times, including one time to himself. Aside from those, he had other relationships, including a legendary fling with the iconic Queen of Pop, Madonna.
Dennis and Madonna didn’t stay long together. They also didn’t have children, although Rodman once flew from a Vegas casino to Madonna’s New York home in an attempt to impregnate her while she was ovulating. But for all the wild stories about their romance, the former Chicago Bull revealed that he and the pop star were a match made in heaven.
“We came together in the perfect time,” said Rodman. “She was stagnating in her career, and I was coming up. We helped to motivate each other, going in the same direction at that particular time.”
Rodman’s easiest relationship
Rodman met Madonna in 1994 while he was playing for the San Antonio Spurs. During that time, “Worm” was the NBA’s best rebounder, and he was in the middle of his remarkable seven-year run as the NBA’s rebounding king.
Meanwhile, after ruling the worldwide music charts during the 80s, Madonna’s 5th studio album, Erotica, released in 1992, was a flop and became her lowest-selling album.
The following year, her movie Body of Evidence was a failure at the box office and poorly received by critics. But while her career was starting to decline, her wild romance with basketball’s “Bad Boy” was on fire.
“We never had any problems,” wrote Rodman in his ‘Bad as I Wanna Be’ book via People. “It was one of the easiest relationships I’d ever been in.”
John Salley spoke about Madonna’s impact
Although the relationship lasted only a couple of months, it was arguably the best affair that Rodman ever had. In fact, Dennis’ former Detroit Pistons teammate John Salley, credited Madonna for positively impacting “The Worm’s” life and basketball career during their short time together.
“Without Madonna, there is no Dennis Rodman, the way we know him. Period,” Salley said.
Although Rodman denied that it was Madonna who influenced his bizarre fashion choices, being with her enabled Dennis to express himself more. And the freer Rodman felt the more driven he was on the basketball court.
After San Antonio, Rodman joined the Chicago Bulls and helped them win three straight championships from 1996 to 1998. In 2004, Madonna also successfully returned to the limelight, with her Reinvention World Tour becoming the highest-grossing tour that year.
