David Letterman was once hailed as the monarch of late-night television, renowned for his quick wit and capacity to engage audiences.

However, in the current cultural landscape, many of his past interviews are being scrutinized more critically. One notable instance involves Jennifer Aniston, whose 2006 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman has resurfaced, leaving many viewers feeling uneasy.

At that time, Aniston was promoting The Break-Up, a romantic comedy in which she starred alongside Vince Vaughn, who also co-wrote and produced the film. What began as a standard late-night interview took an awkward turn when Letterman fixated on Aniston’s legs.

Aniston, dressed in a black button-down blouse and fashionable black shorts, exuded effortless style. Yet, rather than concentrating on her film, Letterman’s focus shifted elsewhere.

“That’s a tremendous outfit,” he remarked, quickly adding, “and the reason that’s a tremendous outfit is because you have tremendous legs. Fantastic legs. You can only wear that if you have lovely, well-shaped, muscular, lengthy legs.”

This comment visibly surprised Aniston. Maintaining her professionalism, she laughed it off, casually explaining that her choice of shorts was simply due to the warm weather.

From limelight to leisure, David Letterman's next shift

However, Letterman persisted.

As their discussion progressed, he returned to the subject, stating, “Your legs, you’ve got something there.” The moment was uncomfortable at the time and has become even more cringeworthy in retrospect.
The interview took an unexpected turn when Letterman questioned Aniston about her rumored relationship with Vince Vaughn, even inquiring if it was Vaughn’s suggestion for her to appear nude in the film. Taken aback, Aniston paused before redirecting the question, implying that Letterman should have posed it to Vaughn during his own appearance on the show.

This trend continued throughout the discussion. As Aniston mentioned Vaughn, Letterman shifted the focus back to her legs, remarking, “I can’t get over your legs, I’m telling you. You got something there.”

He then made another questionable comment: “I hope to God somebody at the house is TiVoing this because I can’t stop looking at this shot.” Although it was unclear which shot he meant, Aniston’s discomfort indicated she understood the shift in focus.

David Letterman Says 'Retirement Is Nonsense'

This was not the first instance of Letterman making Aniston visibly uneasy. A particularly notorious moment occurred during a 1998 interview when the late-night host grabbed her neck and sucked on a strand of her hair. Aniston, clearly disturbed, recoiled and awkwardly wiped her hair with the tissue Letterman had offered her.

Clips of this incident have resurfaced over the years, inciting outrage each time. A viral tweet from 2021 reignited the conversation, with a user sharing the video and stating, “Since we’re talking about David Letterman being awful… is anyone ever going to address this?”

In light of the footage today, many viewers are appalled by the invasive nature of that moment. Letterman handed her a tissue after contaminating her hair with his saliva, as if expecting her to clean up after the bizarre encounter.

Despite these uncomfortable experiences, Aniston continued to appear on The Late Show, managing each situation with the grace and poise that have characterized her career.

In 2008, two years after the awkward “legs” interview, she returned to the show, this time donning a stylish pink party dress.
In the course of promoting her latest film, Marley & Me, Aniston presented Letterman with a unique gift—a Brooks Brothers necktie that mirrored the one she donned on the cover of GQ Magazine, where she appeared wearing only the patriotic accessory.

“This is an early Christmas gift,” she remarked with a smile as she handed him the tie.

Without hesitation, Letterman replaced his own tie with the one Aniston had given him. “Interestingly, the tie made the same remark during the photoshoot,” he joked, clearly amused by the gesture.

Aniston playfully assisted him, exclaiming, “This is thrilling; I’m dressing Dave!” As he adjusted the tie, he realized it seemed a bit too short.

“You know what they say about men with short ties,” he quipped, prompting gasps and laughter from the audience.

While the exchange was lighthearted and entertaining, it highlighted a recurring theme—Letterman’s interviews with female stars often included remarks that may not align with today’s cultural standards.

Although Jennifer Aniston has not publicly commented on these interactions, they are now being reevaluated.

What was once regarded as “late-night humor” is now sparking more profound discussions about the treatment of women in Hollywood during media interviews.

As these clips resurface, viewers are reconsidering what was previously deemed acceptable and recognizing the difficulties that female celebrities have encountered in the entertainment industry.

While Aniston navigated each situation with grace, it is difficult to overlook how many of these instances—particularly those involving Letterman—have not aged well.
