Ben Affleck said he could no longer keep up with his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez’s lavish lifestyle before the couple split last year.

The actor reportedly feared her “extravagant lifestyle” would “endanger” him. After an on-again, off-again relationship, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez married in 2022. Just two years later, she filed for divorce.

Earlier this week, the Pearl Harbor star finally opened up about the “cracks” he experienced in his marriage, something Lopez previously talked about in the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told .

Additionally, Ben Affleck insists there was nothing bad behind their split. He told GQ magazine that they were just two different people, with two opposing views on fame.

Ben Affleck shared with GQ : “My temperament is a bit more reserved and private than hers. Like in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things.”

Affleck also worries that her busy life will lead him back to “dangerous paths.” The Justice League star has struggled with alcoholism for years and has been through rehab several times.

At the time of their split, a source close to the actor-director told RadarOnline.com that he was “risking his life in that environment” and so he “had to leave to avoid the nightmare of relapse.”

“The marriage was really too much to handle. Jennifer Lopez had a very lavish lifestyle and he was constantly faced with temptation,” the source said.

Lopez has been sober for years, but after launching her Delola cocktail line in 2023, she explained that she “still enjoys the occasional cocktail.” But for an alcoholic like Affleck, “there’s no balance” when it comes to even light alcohol.

“It’s really unhealthy for Affleck to be exposed to any type of alcohol. And with Jennifer Lopez, drinking at parties and being around celebrities is unavoidable,” an insider said.

The Oscar-winning actor said life with the superstar meant he would be thrust into the limelight, adding that that level of attention was not who he was.

However, in another part of the interview, the movie star praised his ex-wife – Jennifer Garner, with whom he has become increasingly close.

Ben Affleck confirmed: “I’m really lucky to have a really good companion and partner like Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mother. She’s amazing and we work really well together.”
