Speaking on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast, Kimmel shared insights into the network’s decision-making process and his own perspective on the matter.

After watching Kimmel’s tape, ABC executives were impressed and decided to bring him in for a meeting, under the pretext of discussing a variety show.

During the meeting, they inquired about Kimmel’s thoughts on CBS host David Letterman, leading to Kimmel securing the late-night hosting role.

Kimmel acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation, noting that both he and Stewart shared the same manager, James ‘Baby Doll’ Dixon.

Dixon had the challenging task of informing Stewart that Kimmel had been selected for the role instead.

Kimmel humorously remarked, “That was a mistake by the way.

They definitely should’ve hired Jon.

If I’m in that position, there’s no question I hire Jon 100 times out of 100.”

Despite the initial tension, Kimmel and Stewart have since developed a strong friendship.
