The son of a prominent Hollywood agent, Samuel Haskell IV, was found dead by suicide in jail just days before his court hearing, after being charged with brutally murdering and dismembering his wife and her parents — a devastating end to a case already marked by horror, loss, and unanswered questions.
Samuel Bond Haskell IV, the 37-year-old son of prominent Hollywood agent and former Miss America executive Sam Haskell III,
was found dead by apparent suicide in his Los Angeles County jail cell on the morning of Saturday, July 13—just two days before he was set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in one of the most shocking murder cases to rock the city in years.
His death has not only devastated the families involved but also left a gaping void in a case already plagued by horror, confusion, and unanswered questions.
Haskell had been held without bail since his arrest in November 2023, when authorities charged him with the murder of his wife, Mei Li Haskell, 37, and her parents, 64-year-old Yanxiang Wang and 72-year-old Gaoshan Li.
The victims had reportedly been living with Haskell and his three children in their Tarzana, California home.
The investigation took a grisly turn when workers hired off Craigslist to remove trash bags from the house grew suspicious of their contents—heavy, leaking, and foul-smelling—and returned shortly after to find them gone.
One day later, a homeless man discovered a human torso in a trash bin behind a strip mall in Encino. DNA tests confirmed it belonged to Mei.
Investigators say Haskell lured the day laborers under false pretenses, and when they backed away, he allegedly disposed of the remaining bags himself.
Surveillance footage and forensic evidence—including a saw, plastic sheeting, and blood traces—tied Haskell to the crime. Yet to this day, the remains of Mei’s parents have not been found.
Prosecutors allege that the triple murder occurred inside the family’s home sometime on or around November 6, 2023. It remains unclear what Haskell’s exact motive was, though friends of the couple described a tense home life, with reports of growing control and isolation.
Despite his privileged background and seemingly picture-perfect family, the accusations against Haskell painted a portrait of a man unraveling behind closed doors.
His suicide in custody has only deepened the wounds. According to jail officials, Haskell had been placed on moderate suicide monitoring and wore an anti-suicide smock.
Nevertheless, he was found unresponsive in his cell around 4:20 a.m. and was pronounced dead shortly after. The cause of death is pending official determination by the coroner.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed public frustration and grief after learning of the suicide, calling it “a cowardly and cruel final act” that denied the victims’ families a chance for justice.
“They deserved to confront him in court,” he said. “They deserved answers. Instead, he robbed them of the truth.”
Defense attorney Joseph Weimortz, however, painted a more complex emotional picture, saying Haskell had grown increasingly concerned about the media spectacle surrounding his case and the impact it might have on his children.
“He told me he wasn’t afraid of a prison sentence,” Weimortz said. “He was afraid his boys would live their entire lives knowing every detail of what he was accused of.”
The couple’s three young sons—ages 6, 8, and 12—are currently under the protection of child services. Family friends and local community members have reportedly rallied to provide support, but the trauma is immense.
Mei was remembered by her friends and students as soft-spoken, kind, and deeply devoted to her children. A trained accountant, she had emigrated from China and worked hard to build a life with Samuel in Los Angeles.
Her father, Gaoshan Li, and mother, Yanxiang Wang, were described as gentle and deeply involved in the family’s daily life. They had been living with the Haskells to help raise the children.
Following Haskell’s death, many are left wondering how someone under suicide watch in a high-profile murder case could end his life unnoticed.
Officials say protocols were followed but are now under review. Advocates are calling for greater accountability and transparency within the jail system, especially when high-risk inmates are involved.
The tragedy continues to reverberate across Los Angeles, not only because of its shocking nature but also because of who was involved.
Sam Haskell III, the suspect’s father, is a well-known figure in Hollywood, having represented top-tier talent like Dolly Parton and worked as CEO of the Miss America Organization. Though he has not spoken publicly, sources close to the family say he is “heartbroken beyond words.”
As the legal proceedings abruptly end with the accused’s suicide, the victims’ families are left to piece together a narrative of unimaginable loss without ever hearing an explanation.
The unanswered questions are likely to linger for years. But one thing is tragically clear—three lives were stolen, a family was shattered, and even justice was ultimately denied.
