I think he pointed out that Sinatra was
only three syllables and mine was four
Lisa Meyers the woman who stood by Chris
christopherson’s side for decades is
finally speaking out about the final
moments of his life what she reveals is
both heartbreaking and deeply personal
shedding light on the intimate details
the public never knew what were Chris’s
last words what happened in those final
days stay with us because her story will
leave you speechless Freedom’s just
another word for Nothing Left to
Lose nothing ain’t worth nothing but his
free feeling good was easy Lord when
Bobby sang the
blue feeling good was good enough for
me good enough for me
that’s good thank you thank
whoa there was no Bobby mcti was
there and not in real life Chris
Christopherson was born in Brownsville
Texas and grew up in a military family
his father Lars a US Army aircore
Officer had high hopes that his son
would follow in his footsteps but
Chris’s young heart was pulled toward
something else I decided I’d get out of
the army and cause a small earthquake in
my family
but well you uh you had a great
education and uh I imagine they had
other things planned for you than
hillbilly music yeah they thought it was
a real step down or a sign of insanity
or something writing the family moved
frequently finally settling in San Mato
by graduating high school in
1954 Chris was steadfast to be a writer
he enrolled at Pomona College and soon
made a name for himself with
prize-winning essays The Rock and gone
are the days his stories were emotional
touching on What mattered to him race
identity and the hidden meanings behind
everyday life but the road to his dreams
was far from smooth at 17 he worked the
hardest job he’d ever had dredging on
Wake Island far from everything he knew
it was a harsh introduction to the Grind
of life but he didn’t back down after
Pomona he earned a roads scholarship to
Oxford
University there he began to write songs
even recording under the name Chris
Carson his music didn’t take off right
away but it was the spark that lit a
fire inside him still still the military
loomed large over his life pressed by
his family Chris joined the US Army he
trained himself to be a helicopter pilot
completed Ranger school and Rose to the
rank of Captain but the songs never left
him even stationed in West Germany he
kept writing forming a band and dreaming
of a different life when his tour ended
the Army offered him a prestigious
teaching position at West Point instead
he chose the uncertain path of Music his
family was devastated they cut ties with
him seeing his choice to be a betrayal
despite the rift Chris found some peace
in his decision he moved to Nashville in
1965 Chasing the Dream with nothing but
his songs life was hard with odd jobs
and medical bills piling up he worked as
a janitor at Columbia recording studios
hoping for a break one day he met June
Carter and handed her a tape asking her
to give it to Johnny Cash weeks passed
and I have yet to receive a response
desperate to be heard Chris made a bold
move he landed a helicopter in Cash’s
yard it was a risk that paid off cash
listened to the tape and decided to
record Sunday Morning Coming Down the
song won Christopherson the 1970 country
music association’s song of the year and
suddenly he was on the map more hits
followed performed by Legends like Ray
Stevens and Jerry Lee Lewis but it
wasn’t until Janice Joplin’s postumus
release of Me and Bobby McGee that
christopherson’s career truly took
flight the song Hit number one and
stayed there for weeks Chris’s name was
everywhere and his life changed forever
in 19 1971 Chris released his second
album the silver tonged devil and I and
his acting career began but even with
all the success Chris was no stranger to
pain his relationships struggled his
life was chaotic and his battles with
self-doubt were ever present through it
all his music was a constant a way to
make sense of the world around him his
fourth album Jesus was a Capricorn
started slow but when why me became a
hit it brought him Fame and an essence
of gratitude for a man who had walked so
many roads creating and sharing music
held him together Chris kristopherson a
man whose life seemed pulled from the
lyrics of his songs lived a story filled
with triumphs and heartbreak for many
years he focused on acting leaving
behind the rebellious rugged sound that
had once def find him his screen
presence was undeniable appearing in
films like Cisco Pike
1972 bloom in love
1973 and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
1973 among others he shared the screen
with greats like Jean Hackman and Bert
Reynolds even starring alongside Barbara
strend in A Star is Born
1976 his performance in that film FM won
him a Golden Globe but despite his
success there was always an air of
restlessness about him like he never
truly found
peace in the late 1970s christopherson’s
Fame seemed
Untouchable however Hollywood can be
unforgiving he turned down roles in
major films like Sorcerer And Handover
Street decisions that perhaps
foreshadowed the challenges ahead his
1979 album shake hands with the devil
flopped and when his NBC TV movie
Freedom Road aired it was met with poor
ratings his musical Star had begun to
fade leaving him again at a Crossroads
then came heavensgate in 1980 a film
that though now regarded to be a classic
was a colossal failure at the time it
dragged Christopherson down with it
robbing him of his A-list status and
altering the course of his
career from then on his acting roles
were Hit or Miss he took roles in
rollover with Jane Fonda in 1981 and the
last days of Frank and Jesse James in
1986 but the height of his acting
success seemed behind him he continued
with quiet dignity playing alongside
Steven seagull in Fire Down Below
1997 and starring in the Blade series
from 1998 to
2004 his role as Whistler in those films
endeared him to a new generation of fans
christopherson’s personal life mirrored
the highs and lows of his career in 1973
he married singer Rita kulig this all
started when in November 1970 fate
brought Rita kulage and Chris
kristopherson together at the Los
Angeles airport both were headed to
Tennessee but Chris felt an undenied
able pull to join her on a detour to
Memphis it was a decision that would
change their lives forever they married
in
1973 and by
1974 they welcomed their first child
into the world celebrating their family
and their love this Duo created magic
together recording several duet albums
that captured the hearts of many their
song from the bottle to the bottom
earned them a Grammy award Award for
best country performance by a do or or
group with vocal in
1974 followed by another win in 1976 for
Lover Please their partnership was a
beautiful blend of Love and Music Rita’s
Talent extended beyond the recording
studio she also represented her acting
skills in Sam Pena’s Western film Pat
Garrett and Billy the Kid in
1973 where she played the role of Maria
sharing the screen with Chris who
pictured Billy the Kid the late 70s
marked a turning point in Rita’s career
bringing her remarkable success on the
pop charts between 1977 and 1978 she
enjoyed four consecutive top 25 hits
including remakes of Classics like
Jackie Wilson’s your love keeps lifting
me higher and higher BOS skags is we’re
all alone the temp temption the way you
do the things you do and Maria Hines you
these hits displayed her Soulful voice
and solidified her place in music
history after many hits the couple
decided to release a Hit album full moon
but when his albums failed to chart and
his music lost momentum so did their
marriage they divorced in 1980 and
Christopherson threw himself back into
film and occasional music music projects
perhaps searching for solace in the work
he married Lisa Meers again in
1983 and built a new life one quieter
and away from the Limelight yet the
weight of his past successes and
failures seemed to hang heavy over him
in the mid 1980s a Revival occurred when
Christopherson joined Willie Nelson
Johnny Cash and Wayan Jennings to form
the super group The Highwaymen
their chemistry was undeniable and their
songs celebrated a shared rugged Spirit
but even when the group succeeded
christopherson’s solo career floundered
never fully recovering its old magic on
the other hand with the passage of time
his acting and music became more
reflective and focused on life’s deeper
questions his albums in the 2000s like
broken freedom song and this Old Road
were quite quier and more intimate they
felt like the musings of a man looking
back on a life filled with joy and
sorrow and yet even when his voice grew
frailer and his performances fewer there
was always a spark in him he toured
occasionally often playing solo acoustic
sets where the songs seemed almost
confessions rather than
performances by 2021 Chris kristopherson
had quietly stepped stepped away from
the stage his health beginning to fail
him his final concert took place in
Florida in February
2020 just months before the world seemed
to change forever it was a fittingly
quiet exit for a man who had spent his
life straddling Fame and obscurity
success and failure Chris kristopherson
passed away on September 28th
2024 at his home home in Maui he was 88
years old in his final years he had
spoken often of how he wanted to be
remembered not for the awards not for
the films or songs but for his Humanity
he had lived through the highs and lows
of life and through it all he had tried
in his way to be free on the other hand
