Martin Sheen born Ramon Antonio Dorado
estaves on August 3 1940 was an American
actor who had a fascinating life and
career
Sheen grew up in Dayton Ohio as one of
ten siblings in a devoutly Catholic
Family
he attended Chaminade High School a
Catholic school for boys in Dayton where
he was an excellent student and a star
athlete
he played football basketball and
baseball and was even offered a baseball
scholarship to the University of Dayton
however Sheen’s love for acting began to
overshadow his passion for sports
he joined the Dayton Playhouse a
community theater group and began
performing in local Productions
after graduating from high school in
1958 he moved to New York City to pursue
a career in acting
in New York Sheen changed his name to
Martin Sheen and began studying at the
prestigious Stella Adler Studio of
acting
he worked odd jobs to support himself
and landed his first professional acting
role in 1961 in the Off-Broadway play
the connection
Shane’s early years in New York were
marked by poverty and hardship
he struggled to make ends meet and even
lived in Central Park for a brief period
when he couldn’t afford rent
however his talent and determination
eventually paid off
and he began to land more significant
roles on stage and in television
Sheen’s breakthrough came in 1969 when
he starred in the drama film
The Subject Was Roses for which he
received a Tony Award nomination for
best featured actor in a play
from there his career continued to soar
and he became one of the most sought
after actors in Hollywood
Sheen’s breakout role came in 1973 when
he starred as kit Caruthers in Terence
Malik’s Badlands
he then starred in Francis Ford
Coppola’s Apocalypse Now in 1979 playing
Captain Benjamin Willard a role that
earned him critical acclaim
Shane was also known for his role as
President Joseph Bartlett on the hit TV
show
The West Wing which ran from 1999 to
2006.
he was nominated for six Emmy Awards for
his portrayal of Bartlett and won a
Golden Globe award in 2001.
Sheen was a passionate activist for
social and political causes throughout
his life
he was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam
War and participated in anti-war
protests in the 1960s and 1970s
he was also a strong supporter of the
civil rights movement and in 1965 he
joined Martin Luther King Jr in the
historic Selma to Montgomery marches
in addition to his acting and activism
Sheen had a strong personal life
he was married to his wife Janet
Templeton for over 50 years and they had
four children together including actors
Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez
despite his many accomplishments Sheen
remained humble and down to earth
throughout his life
he was known for his kindness and
generosity toward his fans and
colleagues and was beloved by many in
the entertainment industry like the
