Sarah Jessica Parker revealed with delight that Andy Cohen’s hilarious season 3 cameo on And Just Like That… was born from Michael Patrick King’s idea to bring him back as a shoe salesman, a nostalgic full-circle moment that required “a lot of takes” because the lifelong friends couldn’t stop laughing together.
Sarah Jessica Parker is opening up about the moment her real-life best friend, Andy Cohen, stepped back into the Sex and the City universe — and why his appearance on season three of And Just Like That… turned into a far more special (and amusing) moment than fans might have realized.
During a Q&A event hosted by Threads at il Buco al Mare in Amagansett, New York, on August 11, Parker, 60, shared behind-the-scenes details about how Cohen ended up playing a role in the revival series.
The actress, best known for her iconic role as Carrie Bradshaw, revealed that the idea for Cohen’s cameo came directly from showrunner and Sex and the City co-creator Michael Patrick King.
“Michael and I, either talked in person, or he just talked to me on the phone and said, ‘I have an idea. There’s a shoe salesman, and it should be Andy,’” Parker told the audience. “I didn’t even hesitate. I immediately said yes.”
According to Parker, King personally called Cohen, 57, with the proposal. “Andy said yes immediately,” she added with a laugh, noting that the Bravo host needed no convincing to reprise his role — or at least a variation of it.
Cohen’s cameo finally aired in a season three episode, where he portrayed Daniel, a charming Bergdorf Goodman shoe salesman who assists Carrie in one of the show’s signature fashion-forward moments.
While the character was technically new, diehard fans couldn’t help but notice the connection to Cohen’s earlier appearance on Sex and the City.
More than 20 years ago, the now-famous television personality had briefly appeared in the season six episode “Let There Be Light” as an unnamed shoe salesman at Barney’s.
Reflecting on the full-circle moment, Parker explained that the decision to bring Cohen back as a shoe salesman wasn’t just a clever Easter egg — it was also a nod to their decades-long friendship.
She admitted that filming the scene wasn’t as effortless as fans might have expected, mostly because the two couldn’t stop laughing.
“We did a lot of takes,” Parker confessed. “It was hard to keep a straight face when your best friend is suddenly acting opposite you on set.”
For Cohen, the cameo was equally nostalgic. Back in July, before the episode aired, he teased his return on Instagram by sharing side-by-side images from both appearances.
“How it went … how it’s going! Thank you Michael Patrick King for bringing back the BELOVED character of ‘Barney’s Shoe Salesman’ … who is now a Bergdorf’s Shoe salesman named DANIEL!” he captioned the post.
The announcement sparked a wave of excitement from fans, many of whom praised the producers for including such a meaningful callback.
Parker and Cohen’s bond has long been one of Hollywood’s most enduring friendships. Beyond their professional collaborations, the two are frequent fixtures at high-profile events.
Cohen often accompanies Parker to the Met Gala, where she has cemented her reputation as one of the red carpet’s most fearless fashion icons.
In fact, Cohen once admitted that being Parker’s Met Gala date was “the jackpot,” calling her the “best person” to attend the event with.
Their off-screen friendship has also been well-documented in interviews and on Cohen’s hit Bravo talk show, Watch What Happens Live.
The two often share anecdotes about nights out in New York City, and Cohen has even described real-life moments where he felt like he was “hanging out with Carrie Bradshaw herself.”
The playful chemistry between Parker and Cohen translated naturally into their And Just Like That… scene, though Parker acknowledged it took patience and multiple takes to nail.
“It’s one thing to act opposite someone you admire, it’s another thing when that person is one of your closest friends,” she said. “The familiarity almost makes it harder, but it also makes it more rewarding.”
For longtime Sex and the City fans, Cohen’s reappearance marks another layer of nostalgia in a series already rich with callbacks.
Season three of And Just Like That… has leaned heavily into revisiting beloved characters and themes while also introducing new faces, proving the franchise still has surprises up its sleeve after more than two decades on screen.
As for Parker, she sees Cohen’s cameo as more than just a fun Easter egg. It’s a reminder of how the show has always blurred the lines between fiction and reality, especially in a city like New York where friendships and fashion intertwine.
“To me, it wasn’t just Andy playing Daniel,” she reflected. “It was about honoring the history of the show, our history together, and giving fans something that felt both familiar and fresh.”
With Cohen’s scene already being hailed as one of the standout moments of the season, fans are left wondering whether the Bravo star might return for future episodes — perhaps this time with an even bigger role.
For now, though, Parker seems content that her friend got his moment in Carrie Bradshaw’s world, and that they both got to share a laugh (or ten) along the way.
