Madelyn Cline, 27, opened up with raw honesty at her new film premiere, admitting she’s “still figuring out love” after high-profile romances with Chase Stokes and Pete Davidson — a journey marked by heartbreak, public scrutiny, and the hard-won lesson that despite the pain, love is still worth the risk.
Madelyn Cline is opening up about matters of the heart in a way that only she can — with a mix of honesty, self-deprecation, and an air of Hollywood glamor.
The 27-year-old Outer Banks star, who has found herself at the center of more than one high-profile romance, shared her “best” piece of love advice during an exclusive sit-down at the premiere of her new film The Map That Leads to You on August 10 in Charleston, South Carolina.
When asked to share the greatest lesson she has learned about love, Cline laughed before offering a candid answer: “Best love advice. I dunno. Fall in love, don’t be afraid of it.
Look, historically, I haven’t been, like, the most successful [at love], so don’t take advice from me until I figure it out.” She added with a wry smile, “But yeah, my advice is don’t be afraid to fall in love.”
Her admission comes at a time when her personal life has been nearly as visible as her professional one. Cline’s relationships have been closely followed by fans and tabloids alike, particularly her highly publicized romance with comedian Pete Davidson.
The two were first linked in September 2023 and remained together until 2024.
While Cline has mostly kept quiet about the details of their time together, she did briefly address the whirlwind pairing earlier this year. “The jokes, they write themselves,” she said in a July cover story interview.
“And I said it before, and I’ll say it again, that is my only comment.” She later softened the remark, adding with affection, “He has a really cute dog and some really great girlfriends now.”
Before Davidson, Cline was in a long-term relationship with her Outer Banks co-star Chase Stokes, who plays John B opposite her character Sarah Cameron. The two began dating in 2019 after meeting on set and went public with their romance in 2020.
Their relationship became a fan obsession, blending real-life chemistry with their on-screen love story.
But in late 2021, less than two years later, the couple split. Cline later admitted on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast that she underestimated the impact of living out a love story under the spotlight.
“I think at the time I didn’t realize what the repercussions [were] of inviting so many people into something, let’s be honest, something that’s intimate,” she shared. “I didn’t understand. I was just so in love. And, you know, people loved it.
I think they loved it because of us, but they also loved John B and Sarah, first and foremost.”
Cline acknowledged that navigating a public breakup was particularly painful.
“You look at any public breakup and so many people are invested, and of course that was really hard,” she said. “And also, we still, to this day, share a very, very big… this huge thing that is a massive part of both of our lives.
So, I think, yeah, it was really hard to separate, but also like any breakup, you grow out of it, which is great.”
Now, with her latest role in The Map That Leads to You — a sweeping romantic drama set to premiere on August 20 — Cline is once again reflecting on the nature of love and healing.
While she may joke about her track record in relationships, her words reveal a deeper philosophy: that love, in all its imperfection, is worth the risk. “Don’t be afraid,” she repeats, as though convincing herself as much as her audience.
Offscreen, Cline has also faced intense scrutiny over her appearance and her evolving public persona.
She recently addressed the criticism in another interview, saying she was “tired of people coming for me” and emphasizing how difficult it can be to maintain boundaries when fans blur the line between her characters and her personal life.
Yet, despite the noise, she continues to rise as one of Hollywood’s most promising young stars.
With her career on an upward trajectory — from Netflix breakout success to leading roles in feature films — and her personal life firmly in the spotlight, Madelyn Cline seems to be embracing both the messiness and the magic of her twenties.
Whether it’s heartbreak, new beginnings, or lessons learned along the way, she isn’t shying away from telling her truth.
And if her own words are any indication, she is still writing her love story: one misstep, one role, and one revelation at a time.
