Jo De La Rosa’s surprise return to RHOC and face-to-face reunion with ex-fiancé Slade Smiley at Heather Dubrow’s party—sparked by Tamra Judge’s calculated invite—reignited long-standing feuds, shocked Gretchen Rossi, and turned a birthday celebration into a dramatic emotional standoff nearly two decades in the making.
The July 31 episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County delivered one of the most jaw-dropping reunions in the franchise’s history — and it happened at what was supposed to be a glamorous birthday celebration.
What began as a typical Housewives soirée quickly devolved into a tense face-off filled with old wounds, awkward hugs, and decades of unresolved drama.
The unexpected storm hit when Tamra Judge walked into Heather Dubrow’s birthday bash with a surprise guest on her arm: none other than Jo De La Rosa, the original RHOC Housewife and former fiancée of Slade Smiley.
Fans of the show will remember Jo and Slade’s tumultuous relationship from the early seasons, with their engagement and eventual split playing out during season 2 back in 2007.
For viewers who’ve followed RHOC since its beginnings, the moment Jo entered the room was both nostalgic and tense — especially for Slade and his current partner, former Housewife Gretchen Rossi, who returned this season in a “friend of” role after a long hiatus.
Slade and Gretchen, now together for 16 years and parents to a young daughter, were visibly caught off guard.
“Out of all the people Tamra could have brought… Tamra is clearly trying to poke,” Gretchen said in a confessional, accusing her longtime nemesis of stirring the pot on purpose. “That’s so her to bring Jo.”
Tamra didn’t deny the strategic nature of her choice. “I asked Heather if it was okay if I brought Jo, and she said, ‘Yes, yes. Bring Jo,’” she explained on camera. “So if Gretchen is threatened by Jo, that’s her problem.”
But before the dramatic run-in, Tamra confessed she was nervous — not just about the party dynamics but also because of her ongoing conflict with Jenn Pedranti and Ryan Boyajian, who were also expected to attend.
“I just want to say thank you so much for going with me because Eddie was like, ‘It’s a hard pass,’” Tamra told Jo before they entered the party. Jo, for her part, acknowledged the awkwardness ahead.
“I know it’s just as stressful for you because it’s probably the first time you’ve seen Slade in decades!” Tamra said. Jo laughed: “I mean, it’s been a minute.”
That “minute” was actually closer to 18 years. After breaking off their engagement, Slade briefly dated fellow Housewife Lauri Peterson before ultimately settling down with Gretchen.
Meanwhile, Jo stepped away from the limelight, moving to Los Angeles and pursuing music and real estate before slowly reemerging at Bravo events like BravoCon 2023, where she and Gretchen publicly agreed to “start fresh.”
But in this episode, fresh starts seemed to take a backseat to fresh tension. As Slade and Gretchen spotted Jo across the room, viewers held their breath.
Eventually, the couple approached Jo to say hello — a moment that, while cordial on the surface, was loaded with emotional baggage.
“Hi Slade,” Jo said softly, standing up to hug him. “Hi Jo,” he replied, somewhat stiffly.
Gretchen chimed in politely: “Nice to see you.” The exchange may have looked civil, but behind the scenes, feelings were anything but.
“It doesn’t matter if Jo and I are good,” Gretchen later said in her confessional. “This has to do with Tamra. Didn’t work. Try again. You’re getting rusty, girl.”
The decades-long feud between Gretchen and Tamra was front and center. While Heather’s husband, Dr. Terry Dubrow, tried to mediate with a light-hearted, “Can’t everything be fixed with an apology?” Gretchen wasn’t having it.
“No, Terry,” she snapped. “No changed behavior? Like Tamra for the last 15 years? Abso-f——lutely not.”
Gretchen went on to explain that the problem wasn’t with Jo at all, but with the underlying message Tamra sent by choosing her as a plus-one: “You’re gonna walk in with my husband’s ex? That’s really good changed behavior.”
The encounter has already ignited debate across social media, with fans divided between Team Gretchen and Team Tamra.
Some praised Tamra for bringing back a fan-favorite OG, while others saw it as a deliberate attempt to provoke Gretchen and reignite old drama.
As season 19 of RHOC continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Jo De La Rosa’s return has shaken the cast — and possibly reopened doors to storylines long thought closed. Whether it leads to healing, more chaos, or a mix of both remains to be seen.
But for now, one party, one ex, and one bold Housewives move have once again reminded viewers why RHOC still reigns as Bravo’s drama capital.
