Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters became an unexpected global hit with a chart-topping soundtrack and sold-out sing-along screenings, and now stars Arden Cho and May Hong say the overwhelming fan response has not only changed their lives but also fueled growing excitement for a highly anticipated sequel.
It has been one of the most surprising entertainment stories of the year: KPop Demon Hunters, the animated adventure blending high-energy K-pop music with supernatural action, has taken both Netflix and theaters by storm.
With a best-selling soundtrack, sing-along screenings filling auditoriums across the country, and buzz about a sequel already building, the film has become a cultural phenomenon.
Now, the voices behind two of its most beloved characters—Arden Cho as the fearless Rumi and May Hong as the witty Mira—are opening up about the whirlwind success and what it means for the future of the franchise.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight’s Denny Directo this week, Cho and Hong reflected on how a quirky, genre-bending project they recorded in a sound booth years ago has suddenly exploded into a global sensation.
“When I first read the script, I thought it was wild and so much fun,” Cho said, laughing.
“I never imagined people would be showing up to theaters dressed like the characters and singing along to the soundtrack. It’s surreal.”
For Hong, whose character Mira has quickly become a fan favorite thanks to her clever one-liners and unexpected depth, the experience has been equally overwhelming.
“We honestly thought this was going to be a niche film, maybe something fans of anime and K-pop would enjoy,” Hong admitted.
“But to see it cross over into the mainstream, with families, kids, and even people who don’t listen to K-pop lining up—it’s incredible.”
KPop Demon Hunters debuted on Netflix earlier this summer, immediately climbing into the platform’s Top 10 worldwide and dominating social media conversations.
The film tells the story of a K-pop girl group that secretly moonlights as demon hunters, using their music and teamwork to fight supernatural forces threatening humanity.
Equal parts comedy, action, and musical spectacle, the project was praised for its originality and dazzling animation.
The success quickly spilled beyond streaming.
The soundtrack, which features a mix of original songs inspired by the story and contributions from well-known K-pop artists, shot up the charts and became a best-seller within weeks of release.
Fans began posting TikTok dance challenges, cosplay videos, and cover performances, turning the film’s songs into viral hits.
Soon, theaters began offering special “sing-along screenings” where audiences could belt out the soundtrack together—transforming the film into a live event experience.
“It’s wild to hear people singing the songs word for word,” Cho said.
“I’ve been tagged in videos where fans are dancing like Rumi or doing their own makeup to look like the characters.
It’s honestly the most rewarding part, to see that level of love and creativity.”
Hong added that the film’s blend of action and music resonated with audiences in unexpected ways.
“People have told us that the movie feels empowering, especially younger viewers who see themselves in these characters,” she explained.
“It’s not just about fighting demons—it’s about friendship, resilience, and embracing who you are.
And I think that’s why it’s striking such a chord.”
The interview also touched on the possibility of a sequel, something fans have been clamoring for since the film’s release.
While neither actor could confirm details, both hinted that conversations are already underway.
“I can’t say much, but let’s just say this isn’t the end of the story,” Cho teased with a smile.
“There are a lot more adventures left for Rumi and Mira.”
Hong echoed the sentiment, adding, “The world we created in KPop Demon Hunters is so rich, and there’s so much more to explore.
I think fans will be very excited about what’s next.”
Beyond its entertainment value, the film has sparked discussions about representation in Hollywood.
With Cho and Hong, two Asian American actresses, voicing central heroes in a mainstream animated feature, many see the project as part of a larger shift toward inclusivity in storytelling.
“When you see characters who look like you, who share aspects of your culture, it makes you feel seen,” Cho said.
“And for us to be part of something that celebrates that on such a big stage—it’s powerful.”
As the momentum behind KPop Demon Hunters continues, Netflix executives have hinted at expanding the franchise, possibly through a sequel, spinoffs, or even a live-action adaptation.
Meanwhile, the sing-along screenings are still drawing packed crowds, with fans treating them like concert events.
For Cho and Hong, the whirlwind has been both exhausting and exhilarating.
“We’re just grateful,” Hong said.
“None of us expected this level of love, and to be able to share this story with the world—it’s beyond what we dreamed.”
And while the story of Rumi and Mira may just be getting started, one thing is certain: KPop Demon Hunters has already carved out a place in pop culture history as a breakout hit that no one saw coming, proving once again that when music, magic, and heart collide, audiences everywhere will follow.
