😱 Storm Kristin Hits Spain: Wind Gusts of 130 km/h and Flooding Leave Andalusia in Chaos! 😱
January 28, 2026.
The Kristin storm, which affected the Mediterranean basin, caused major damage in the Andalusia region in southern Spain.
The meteorological event, accompanied by wind speeds reaching 130 km/h, strong waves, and heavy rainfall, left 170,000 people without electricity and suspended education in 77 municipalities.
Authorities called for maximum precautions, and emergency protocols were activated.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency activated alerts at various levels across the region, with Almería province in particular raised to a red alert level due to wind speeds reaching 130 km/h.

This critical meteorological situation continued at orange and yellow alert levels across the rest of the region, while the entire Andalusian coastline was placed under an orange alert due to strong waves.
The most noticeable effect of the storm on land was widespread physical damage caused by the wind.
Thousands of trees were uprooted, large branches were broken, and numerous structures and open areas were damaged across Andalusia, especially in the province of Almería, where a red alert was in effect.
Emergency warning messages were sent to residents in 36 inland settlements due to wind speeds approaching 130 km/h.
Transportation came to a standstill in some places due to fallen trees and drifting garbage containers on the streets.
Across Almería, pieces of roofs were torn off by the wind and scattered across the streets, and greenhouses in some agricultural areas were damaged.

Damage to power lines and rural areas prolonged the outages.
Authorities emphasized that citizens should remain indoors, especially during the red alert period.
In the province of Cádiz, the storm caused serious consequences with both wind and rain.
Numerous trees fell across the city, and traffic was temporarily halted on some main roads.
Power outages affected large areas, particularly in rural regions.
In addition, precautionary evacuations were carried out in some areas due to controlled water releases from dams.

In the province of Jaén, winds exceeding 90 km/h caused widespread damage throughout the city.
Some streets were closed to traffic due to large trees falling.
Street lights, signs, and awnings were damaged in the city center.
It was reported that one person was injured when a tree fell on their vehicle while driving.
One of the biggest problems caused by the storm on a regional scale was widespread power outages.
More than 170,000 people across Andalusia were left without electricity.
One of the largest outages occurred in the Seville region, cutting off power to approximately 55,000 households.
Officials said most of the outages were caused by fallen trees damaging power lines.
Emergency services continued to work under high pressure throughout Andalusia during the hours when the storm intensified.
The number of calls to emergency hotlines reached nearly 2,000 during the day.
The majority of reported incidents involved fallen trees, broken branches, displaced roof sections, damaged signs, street lamps, and various pieces of urban equipment that had been blown away.
Teams carried out simultaneous interventions in city centers and residential areas, especially during periods when the wind remained strong.

The Andalusian coastline was also affected by the storm.
Warnings that wave heights could reach dangerous levels in coastal areas facing the Mediterranean Sea were quickly confirmed on the ground.
Powerful waves along the Granada coastline occasionally breached the breakwaters and reached the shoreline.
Rocks, sand, and pieces of wood were carried onto the coastal walking paths, and most beaches were closed for safety reasons.
Wave action along the Granada coastline combined with wind pressure caused damage to structures along the shore.

Reports indicate that railings were damaged and wall sections were dislodged in some areas.
Breakwaters were strained by successive waves, while steps and walkways along the coastline became unusable.
Due to the storm’s impact, municipal teams worked on-site to clear debris washed up by the sea and take precautions against new flood risks.
The heavy rainfall accompanying the system rapidly increased the risk of flooding throughout Andalusia.
Rainwater accumulated in a short time in many settlements, causing flooding on streets and roads.

It was reported that roads were flooded in many places in the provinces of Cádiz and Jaén, and some underpasses were closed to traffic.
In rural areas, transportation was disrupted due to flooded roads, and additional measures were taken in some settlements to protect the drinking water infrastructure.
Authorities emphasized that although the rainfall has weakened at times, the water accumulated in the soil will keep the risk of flooding high for some time.
Although the main body of the storm has begun to move away from the region, atmospheric instability is expected to continue for some time.
According to the latest assessments shared by the authorities, showers will continue in places over the next few hours.

Winds will blow moderately at times, and wave activity will gradually subside, especially in coastal areas.
While cloudy weather prevails in inland areas, it is emphasized that the risk of flooding has not completely disappeared due to river levels and water-saturated ground.
Therefore, the call for caution and following official warnings continues throughout the region.
