SHOCKING! Jesus Returns to Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives Splits in Two
On the ancient hills of Jerusalem stands the Mount of Olives, the silent guardian of centuries of history, prayers, and prophetic secrets.
But a day will come when that silence will be broken because the scriptures announce that Jesus will return.
And when his feet touch this sacred ground, the mountain will split in two, creating a gigantic fracture that opens a deep valley dividing east and west.
As the earth shakes under divine power, earthquakes will rattle the walls of the holy city.
Dust will rise like smoke, and the heavens will resonate with glory and terror.
It will be the instant when the eternal breaks into the earthly, and the victorious King reclaims his throne.
Considering all this, we inevitably wonder what fate awaits Jerusalem and the entire world when the King returns with power and judgment.
Are we prepared for the day when heaven and earth meet, and nothing will be the same again?
Dear listener, today we explore this prophecy and the day when the earth itself will open before the King who returns in glory, and how terrifying it will be for his enemies and for all those who refuse to accept him into their hearts as their Savior.
In the heart of the Middle East, where political borders intertwine with faith and history, there is a place whose significance has transcended the ages.
That place is the Mount of Olives.
To understand the magnitude of the events associated with this mountain, it is essential to analyze its context from multiple perspectives: geographical, historical, cultural, strategic, and spiritual.
Located east of Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives is part of the mountain range that surrounds the ancient city.
At an altitude of approximately 89 meters above sea level, this mountain offers a privileged view of Jerusalem, especially of the esplanade where sacred Muslim monuments such as the Dome of the Rock and the esplanade of the mosques now stand.

Separated from the city by the Kidron Valley, the Mount of Olives acts as a natural balcony from which to contemplate, analyze, and understand the complex topographical and urban structure of Jerusalem.
From a military and historical perspective, this elevation has had undeniable strategic value.
Over the centuries, invading armies, merchant caravans, and pilgrimage groups have used its slopes as observation points, mandatory crossings, or temporary refuges.
The Mount of Olives is not just a geographical feature; it is also a silent witness to some of the region’s most significant events.
Since ancient times, its slopes have been the scene of religious rituals, processions, speeches, and secret meetings.
Battles have been fought there, ceremonies have been held, and meetings have taken place that marked the course of regional history.
During the second temple period, it was common for residents of Jerusalem and pilgrims attending religious festivals to cross the Mount of Olives on their way to the holy city.
Archaeological records confirm the existence of trails, agricultural terraces, and water harvesting systems in the area, evidence of human activity that has developed there for centuries.
The Mount of Olives also has a spiritual dimension that places it at the center of world attention.
For Judaism, this place is considered sacred, especially concerning the eschatological hope of the resurrection of the dead.
In fact, it is estimated that more than 150,000 graves cover the slopes of the mountain, forming one of the oldest and most revered Jewish cemeteries in the world.
Many of these graves belong to rabbis, religious leaders, and prominent figures in the history of the Jewish people.
For Christianity, the Mount of Olives is closely linked to the final days of the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
According to historical and religious accounts, it was on this mountain that Jesus delivered some of his most significant speeches, predicted the destruction of Jerusalem, and retreated to pray before being arrested.
The Garden of Gethsemane, located on its western slope, remains a place of pilgrimage for millions of people each year.
Furthermore, the Bible mentions that it was from this mountain that Jesus ascended to heaven, an event that for believers marked the end of his physical presence on earth and began a wait that has lasted for centuries.
The Mount of Olives is not simply a geographical point in the landscape of Jerusalem.
According to the Bible, it is a setting designated from eternity for the fulfillment of one of the most momentous events in human history.
To understand the scope of what will happen at this place, it is necessary to go directly to the scriptures and analyze the key passage that describes that moment.
Let us read in Zechariah 14:4: “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives will split in two, eastward and westward, making a very large valley.
Half of the mountain will move toward the north and half toward the south.”
To understand the magnitude of this prophecy and what will happen on the Mount of Olives, it is essential to place it within its overall biblical, historical, and prophetic context.
The prophet Zechariah lived and wrote around 520 BC.
This period corresponds to the time following the Babylonian exile when the Jews, after 70 years of captivity in Babylon, returned to Jerusalem under the decree of King Cyrus of Persia.
At that time, the city of Jerusalem lay in ruins, the temple destroyed, and the nation plunged into frustration and fear.
Enemies around them opposed reconstruction, and the people suffered spiritual discouragement.
God raised up Zechariah alongside the prophet Haggai to encourage the people to rebuild the temple and renew their hope in God’s promises.
But Zechariah’s message was not limited to the immediate present.
Through visions and prophecies, God revealed the glorious future of Jerusalem, the coming of the Messiah, and the final events that would transform history.
The final chapters of the book of Zechariah, from 12 to 14, contain an eschatological prophetic block that announces the last days.
This block describes the stages leading up to the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth.
Zechariah 14 is considered one of the most direct and detailed eschatological passages in the Old Testament concerning the final events of human history and the establishment of the messianic kingdom on earth.
This chapter should not be interpreted symbolically or allegorically.
The text, in its grammatical structure and prophetic content, describes concrete, physical, visible, and progressive events that will unfold at a specific time in the future at the close of the present age.
Zechariah 14 is inserted at the end of a block of prophecies that began in chapters 12 and 13.
In that block, God reveals the future siege and suffering of Jerusalem, God’s supernatural intervention in defense of his people, Israel’s national repentance, the spiritual purification of the nation, judgment on the rebellious nations, and the establishment of God’s kingdom in Jerusalem.
Chapter 14 serves as the culmination of this process.
It presents in an orderly and chronological manner the final events that will lead to the visible establishment of the Messiah’s kingdom on earth.
These events are as follows: First of all, the rebellion of the nations against Jerusalem.
The Bible announces that in the last days, the entire world will rise up in open rebellion against God’s purpose and the people of Israel.
This rebellion will not be an isolated or improvised event.
It will be the result of a progressive spiritual, political, and military opposition that will culminate in a coordinated global attack against Jerusalem.
Zechariah 14:2 clearly states, “For I will gather all nations to battle against Jerusalem, and the city will be taken, and the houses will be plundered and the women ravished, and half the city will go into captivity, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city.”
Here it is emphasized that it is God who sovereignly permits and coordinates the uprising of the nations as part of his redemptive and judgment plan.
The expression “all nations” is not exaggerated; it is literal and implies a unified global military and political coalition with the specific objective of destroying the Jewish people and seizing Jerusalem.
This same event is announced in other prophetic texts that confirm its global and spiritual dimension.
In Joel 3:2, it says, “I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat, and there I will enter into judgment with them for my people and for Israel, my inheritance, whom they have scattered among the nations, and have divided my land.
” Here it is shown that the reason for God’s wrath will be the attempt of the nations to divide the land of Israel and attack its people.
Revelation 16:14-16 presents it in the context of the final battle of Armageddon.
Let’s see what the biblical account says: “For they are spirits of demons performing signs which go out to the kings of the earth and the whole world to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
And he gathered them to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.
” This global movement will be orchestrated by demonic forces but under the sovereign control of God, who will use this conflict to execute judgment and reveal his glory.
Therefore, this is not a simple territorial war but the culmination of a global spiritual rebellion against God’s plan.
In second place, the initial devastation of the city.
During this siege, the nations will manage to partially capture the holy city.
In Zechariah 14:2, he details it precisely: “And the city will be taken and the houses will be plundered and the women ravished, and half of the city will go into captivity, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city.”
This suffering does not mean that God has abandoned Jerusalem, but rather that he is allowing this process as part of a time of purification, judgment, and spiritual preparation before its final restoration.
This event coincides with what Jesus himself announced when he warned the inhabitants of Jerusalem of a great and unprecedented tribulation.
Jesus says in Matthew 24:21, “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be.”
Jeremiah also refers to this period as the time of Jacob’s trouble.
In Jeremiah 30:7, we read, “Oh, how great is that day! So great that there is none like it. A time of trouble for Jacob, but he shall be delivered from it.”
The initial devastation of the city is part of God’s disciplinary and redemptive process for his people.
It will be a time of profound suffering, but also of national outcry and repentance, which will prepare Israel to recognize the Messiah.
It will not be the end of Jerusalem, but rather the stage before God’s glorious intervention in defense of his city and his people.
Now, at the most critical moment when all seems lost, the Lord himself will descend and fight against the nations.
This will not be an invisible spiritual intervention but a literal, visible, and powerful act.
God will manifest himself as warrior and judge in defense of his people.
Let us read Zechariah 14:3 and 4: “Afterward, the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as he fights in the day of battle.
And his feet will stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives will split in two, eastward and westward, making a very large valley.
Half of the mountain will move toward the north and half toward the south.”
This is one of the clearest and most literal announcements of the Messiah’s visible return to earth in the entire Bible.
Here it is stated that on that very day, the Lord will not only fight against the nations but will physically descend and his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives.
The expression “his feet will stand” in Hebrew implies taking a firm, visible, and concrete position.
This is not a spiritual or symbolic apparition but a literal act.
God, in the person of the Messiah Jesus, will place his feet on the ground of Jerusalem.
This detail is consistent with what the angels announced in Acts 1:11 and 12 when Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives.
The angels said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking up to heaven? Jesus was taken from you into heaven, but one day he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go.”
The apostles then returned from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem, a kilometer away.
Therefore, there is a perfect correspondence between Zechariah’s prophecy and the promise made in Acts.
Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives and will return to that same place.
The mountain is located just east of Jerusalem, separated by the Kidron Valley.
This geographical detail has remained unchanged for centuries, confirming the accuracy of the prophecy.
It is within this context that one of the most significant geological and supernatural events in the Bible occurs: the literal fracture of the Mount of Olives.
The passage from Zechariah says, “And the Mount of Olives will split in two toward the east and toward the west, making a very great valley, and half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south.”
The Hebrew verb used for “will split” is “baka,” which throughout the Bible indicates a physical, actual, violent act of opening or breaking.
This verb appears in texts such as Exodus 14:21 when God opened the Red Sea, in Numbers 16:31 when the earth opened to swallow the rebels of Korah, and in Judges 15:19 when God opened a cavity in the rock to give water.
Thus, in Zechariah 14:4, the use of “baka” indicates that the Mount of Olives will literally split open, fracturing in two as a direct consequence of God’s glorious presence upon it.
The region surrounding the Mount of Olives is not geologically stable.
Modern scientific studies have confirmed that the entire Jerusalem area and the Mount of Olives, in particular, is crisscrossed by active geological faults.
The Mount of Olives is located at the northwestern edge of one of the largest and most active geological structures on the planet, the Great Rift Valley.
This tectonic fault system begins in southeastern Africa and extends northward through the Red Sea, the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and the Jerusalem region.
Experts have identified that this area has historically been affected by severe earthquakes, and there is a latent geological risk.
Various archaeological and geological investigations on the Mount of Olives have revealed underground cracks and fissures crisscrossing the area, as well as evidence of ancient tectonic movements and unstable soils in certain areas, especially on the eastern slopes.
Direct correlation exists between the mountain’s location and the regional fault system.
A report published by the Israel Geological Authority in the 1990s confirmed the presence of underground fractures, especially on the eastern side of the Mount of Olives.
This makes it perfectly plausible from a strictly scientific point of view that a major seismic event, whether naturally or supernaturally triggered, could literally fracture the Mount of Olives, as Zechariah describes.
Now, the fracture of the Mount of Olives is not a simple natural phenomenon.
In the biblical narrative, it is a direct action of God with a clear spiritual and eschatological purpose.
The earth, nature, and geography respond to the presence of the Creator.
Examples of this in the Bible include the shaking of Mount Sinai when God descended, the darkening of the sky and the earthquake at Christ’s crucifixion, and the cataclysms described in the judgments of the apocalypse.
The fracture of the Mount of Olives will be an undeniable sign that the Creator has returned and that his authority is manifested not only spiritually but also physically.
The Mount of Olives will split in two, eastward and westward, forming a very large valley.
The prophet says the mountain will literally split in half as a direct consequence of the Lord’s glorious manifestation.
This event will not be a simple seismic movement but a radical and supernatural alteration of geography brought about by the presence of the Messiah.
The direction of the fracture is eastward and westward, meaning the mountain will open from east to west, creating a geographic corridor connecting the eastern desert with Jerusalem.
This detail has a profound spiritual significance in the Bible.
The east has always been associated with the movement of God’s glory.
The prophet Ezekiel says that the glory of the Lord will enter through the Eastern Gate.
Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives and will return from the east, as Matthew says that his coming will be visible like the lightning that comes out of the east and appears as far as the west.
The fracture will open a very large valley.
This expression indicates that it won’t be a simple crack but a wide, deep, and navigable space large enough to allow the passage of a large crowd.
Let us read Zechariah 14:5: “And you will flee to the valley of the mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azal. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah. And the Lord my God will come, and all the saints with him.”
This verse is the immediate continuation of Zechariah’s description of the literal fracture of the Mount of Olives.
Following this geological event, a geographical phenomenon occurs.
A very large valley forms, a natural corridor opening between the two halves of the mount.
The prophecy adds, “You will flee in the same way that you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah.”
Here, Zechariah connects the future event with a historical event recorded in the memory of the people.
According to Amos 1:1 and Jewish traditions, during the reign of Uzziah, a devastating earthquake occurred in Judah.
The magnitude of the quake was such that it remained etched in the collective memory as a day of terror and flight.
Zechariah uses this historical memory to illustrate the level of urgency and desperation that the situation in Jerusalem will provoke in the last days.
Just as in the time of Uzziah, the people fled for their lives because of the earthquake, so they will flee when the mountain cracks and the valley is formed.
But the verse doesn’t end with the flight.
It says, “The Lord my God will come and all the saints with him.
” This is the climax of the passage.
The people’s flight is not a sign of definitive defeat but rather part of the process of divine intervention.
The Lord himself will descend not only as judge but as liberator.
His arrival will be visible, powerful, and glorious.
The expression “all saints” is interpreted as a reference to the heavenly armies that accompany the Messiah on his return.
In Revelation 19:14, it is described that Christ returns with the heavenly armies dressed in white linen, and that his coming is accompanied by saints and angels.
This verse as a whole reveals three clear truths.
First, the valley that forms after the fracture of the mountain will be a literal escape route for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Second, the event will be as impactful and urgent as the earthquake of Uzziah’s time.
Third, God’s return will not be in isolation but accompanied by his saints in a glorious display of power and authority.
Now, for the Mount of Olives to literally split in half, as Zechariah prophecies, and for its two halves to move in opposite directions, science says that an earthquake of very high magnitude would be required.
Experts agree that this level of geological fracturing would only occur if the earthquake reached at least 7.5 to 8.5 on the Richter scale or even higher.
To understand the magnitude of such an event, it is necessary to understand what causes an earthquake of that magnitude.
When an earthquake is between 6 and 7 on the Richter scale, the damage observed is severe but mostly limited to building collapses, surface cracks in the ground, and destruction of infrastructure.
However, the overall structure of the mountains or high elevations remains intact.
When an earthquake reaches magnitudes between 7.5 and 8, the situation changes dramatically.
This energy level is enough to cause visible fractures in the earth’s surface, significant ground displacement, the opening of deep cracks, changes in topography, deformation in the relief, and in some cases, the formation of new valleys or permanent geological faults.
In short, the landscape is not only damaged but also irreversibly changed.
When an earthquake exceeds magnitude 8, the effects are not limited to isolated damage but also cause large-scale geographical changes.
The earth literally moves, mountains rise, land subsides, river courses shift, and even coastlines change shape, as demonstrated by some of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
To better understand what an earthquake of that magnitude would entail, it is enough to look at some historical examples.
In 1964, the Alaska earthquake measured 9.2 on the Richter scale.
That quake shifted the land several meters, altered the coastline, and permanently changed the geography of the region.
Another example is the 1960 Chile earthquake, the strongest ever recorded, measuring 9.5.
This event generated tsunamis, subsidence, and landslide changes that altered the structure of vast areas of land.
More recently, in 2015, the 7.8 magnitude Nepal earthquake triggered mountain slides, deep fractures in the ground, and massive destruction.
If an earthquake of that magnitude occurs on the Mount of Olives, its consequences would be exactly as described in the prophecy.
The mountain would split in two; its two halves would move in opposite directions, and a very large valley would form just as the book of Zechariah states.
From a scientific perspective, this scenario is not only possible but also fits within what is known about major earthquakes that have affected the planet in the past.
From a biblical perspective, it will be the direct and sovereign act of God that will bring about that event at the exact moment as part of his intervention in human history.
In conclusion, when we analyze everything we have seen, it is absolutely clear that God has a sovereign, orderly, and perfect plan, and that what he has declared in his word will not go unfulfilled.
Every written prophecy, every foretold detail, even those that seem humanly impossible, such as the literal fracture of the Mount of Olives, are part of a divine program that will be executed with pinpoint precision in the time God has established.
Throughout history, humanity has seen biblical prophecies fulfilled one after another—some in the spiritual realm, others in the political realm, others in the people of Israel, and many of them, as we are seeing, in the physical and geographical realm.
And this will be no exception.
What Zechariah announced more than 2,500 years ago is not a myth, nor a legend, nor a metaphor, but a literal announcement supported by the word of God himself and confirmed by the geological reality of the region.
God has established that on the day the Messiah returns to Earth, the Mount of Olives will split in two, a vast valley will open up, and Jerusalem will witness one of the most shocking events humanity has ever seen.
This will be a day of judgment for the nations, but also a day of liberation for his people—a day when the entire world will know that Jesus Christ is King and that the God of Israel reigns over creation.
This doesn’t depend on human predictions, politics, or governments.
This is part of God’s program, an unbreakable plan that no power on earth can stop.
The earth will respond, the mountains will move, and the Creator will show that his authority transcends the visible and the invisible.
