Joe Flacco’s Jaw-Dropping Bombshell on Shedeur Sanders: ‘Right Behind Me on the Depth Chart’ – So Why Is Cleveland Keeping Him in the Shadows?
Joe Flacco, the seasoned Cleveland Browns quarterback named as Week 1 starter, dropped a bombshell that’s sending ripples through the NFL: Shedeur Sanders, the young rookie sensation, is “right there” competing at a high level and pushing Flacco to work harder.
Flacco didn’t just talk about himself during his recent media session.
He lavished praise on Sanders, highlighting the rookie’s impressive performances in training sessions, minicamp, and OTAs.
“He pushed the boundaries in everything,” Flacco said, acknowledging the fierce competition Sanders brings to the quarterback room.
This admission from a veteran who’s been around the league is significant.
It confirms what fans and analysts have long suspected — Sanders has the talent, poise, and drive to be a serious contender for the Browns’ future under center.
Yet here’s the paradox: despite Flacco’s glowing remarks, Sanders remains buried on the depth chart, denied reps with the first-team offense and sidelined from real game snaps.
Why? Analyst Garrett Bush sharply criticized the Browns’ approach, calling it a glaring failure to prepare for the future.
“The Browns are one play away from having to talk about one of these two kids starting,” Bush said.
But instead of grooming Sanders as the reliable backup to Flacco, the team has relegated him to the sidelines with support staff.
Bush didn’t hold back: he accused Coach Kevin Stefanski of not doing what’s best for the team.
Instead of developing their young quarterback, Stefanski is handing critical reps to a 41-year-old Flacco, whose age and injury risk could jeopardize the entire season.
This isn’t an isolated incident, either.
Bush pointed to a recurring pattern of missed opportunities and poor quarterback management that has plagued the Browns for years.
“They worry about the wrong stuff,” he said, lamenting the organization’s failure to learn from past mistakes.
Stefanski’s recent press conference only added fuel to the fire.
His visible discomfort when mentioning Sanders, vague responses about why Flacco started the third preseason game, and deflections about player needs betrayed a lack of conviction.
“We do what the players need,” Stefanski said, but his words rang hollow when Sanders hasn’t been given a single real chance on the field.
Fans are understandably frustrated.
The quarterback they’re most excited about, the one many believe represents the franchise’s future, hasn’t been allowed to prove himself in live action.
Instead of inspiring confidence, Stefanski’s answers spark doubt and confusion about the Browns’ quarterback direction.
Flacco, however, defended the team’s handling of Sanders, emphasizing the mental challenges rookies face.
“You’ve got to fight through the boredom and monotony,” Flacco explained, implying that Sanders must manage his own mindset and stay ready despite limited opportunities.
But analysts like Ryan Clark aren’t convinced.
Clark bluntly stated that Sanders hasn’t been given the game time he needs to truly prove himself.
“How can the Browns evaluate their quarterback of the future if Sanders isn’t getting real snaps?” Clark asked rhetorically.
The Browns’ indecision seems to be buying time rather than making progress.
Stefanski’s repeated promises to “make the call in a couple of days” sound more like stalling tactics than strategic planning.
Fans see through this, interpreting it as another excuse to keep Sanders in the shadows.
This quarterback saga is about more than just Week 1 starters.
It’s about the Browns’ leadership, vision, and trust in their young talent.
Flacco’s praise of Sanders signals that the veteran sees the rookie’s potential, yet the coaching staff’s reluctance to elevate Sanders raises uncomfortable questions.
Is the Browns’ front office truly committed to building around Sanders, or are they clinging to short-term security at the expense of long-term success?
The longer they stall, the greater the risk of losing a golden opportunity to develop a franchise quarterback.
The stakes couldn’t be higher.
This isn’t just about who takes snaps in the preseason or even the regular season opener.
It’s about setting the tone for the franchise’s future and restoring faith among a passionate fanbase.
