The Last Call of Lissandra Vespera

At Silver Creek Diner, the hum of conversation blended with the clinking of silverware.
Afternoon sunlight poured through the windows, illuminating the chrome surfaces that gleamed like the polished armor of a knight.
Lisa, known in another life as Lissandra Vespera, moved with an elegance that belied her humble surroundings.
To the regulars, she was just another waitress, but to those who knew better, she was a ghost from a world shrouded in shadows.
Two Delta Force operatives swaggered in, their presence a storm of bravado and arrogance.
One of them, with a grin that stretched too wide, leaned over the counter, his eyes glinting with mischief.
As his hand reached for her wrist, he pulled back her sleeve, revealing the inked raven mid-flight, clutching a lightning bolt.
The words “Task Force Echo” danced across her forearm in Gothic script.
“Fake,” he sneered, the accusation sharp as a knife.
His grip tightened.
Lisa didn’t flinch.
Her voice was steady, a calm sea amidst the brewing storm.
“Kindly release my arm.”
The diner fell silent, forks frozen mid-air as the tension thickened like smoke.
Just then, the low hum of engines approached.
Three black Chevy Suburbans glided into the parking lot, and men in crisp uniforms stepped out, each movement a testament to their discipline.
Leading them was General Harlan, a figure who commanded respect with every step.
“Sergeant Vespera,” he called out, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade.
The younger operative’s bravado shattered, replaced by a ghostly pallor.
“Sir, we didn’t know—”
“Clearly,” Harlan replied, his tone icy.
“Stand down.
Both of you.”
With a flick of his wrist, he dismissed them, turning his full attention to Lisa.
The years melted away in the charged air between them.
“It’s been a long time, Lissandra.”
“Ten years and three months, sir,” she replied, her posture straightening, not as a waitress but as a soldier.
“I need to talk to you.
Now.”
Lisa nodded, removing her apron with the same precision she once used to disarm a bomb.
Outside, the air crackled with tension as they approached the waiting Suburbans.
Harlan opened the rear door of the middle one, and she slipped inside, the weight of the past pressing down like the heavy metal of a weapon.
“I knew it was you the moment I saw that coffee pour,” he said, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.
“You always had that surgeon’s touch.”
A ghost of a smile played on her lips.
“And you always had a flair for dramatic entrances.”
But the mood shifted as Harlan leaned closer, his voice dropping.
“Things are moving.
People are talking.
Your name came up.”
“I’m not in the game anymore,” she replied, her fists clenching in her lap.
“You were Task Force Echo.
You are Task Force Echo.
And someone is trying to erase us—permanently.”
Her heart raced.
“Who?”
“Three Echo veterans have died in the last two months.
‘Accidents.
’” He swiped through images on a tablet—each death meticulously orchestrated.
“I think you’re next, Liss.”
Suddenly, the Suburban veered off the road.
Before Harlan could react, a white van slammed into them, the impact reverberating like thunder.
Airbags deployed, and Lisa was thrown against the door.
As the world spun, she kicked the door open, dragging Harlan with her.
Gunfire erupted, shattering the rear window.
Lisa snatched the sidearm from Harlan’s belt, diving behind a rock.
“Ambush?” she shouted over the chaos.
“Has to be,” he grunted, wiping blood from his lip.
“They were waiting for us.”
Peeking out, she counted three men with suppressed rifles advancing.
“They’re professionals.”
“Too late to play dead,” she said, smirking grimly.
With a swift motion, she popped up and fired, dropping the first man.
The second was too slow, and she dispatched him with ease.
Harlan joined her, his aim as steady as it had been in their past missions.
The third attacker retreated, and a whistle pierced the air.
The van exploded, sending debris flying.
When the smoke cleared, the last man had vanished.
Lisa helped Harlan to his feet.
“They’re cleaning up as they go.
No evidence.
No witnesses.”
“Which means they’ll be back,” he said, urgency in his voice.
“Then we don’t give them a second chance.”
As they climbed into the second Suburban, Lisa’s adrenaline surged, but it quickly waned, leaving her hands trembling.
“I never signed up for this again,” she admitted.
“You signed up the day you got that ink,” he reminded her.
“You knew it wouldn’t end clean.”
“I had a life,” she replied.
“I was building something quiet.”
“They’re not coming for your quiet.
They’re coming for you.”
The world outside blurred as they sped through the woods.
Four minutes later, they landed at a hidden chopper pad.
The familiar sound of rotors filled the air as they boarded the helicopter.
Lisa watched the ground recede, her past life shrinking into nothingness.
“I want names,” she demanded.
“You’ll get them,” Harlan promised.
“But this goes deeper than we thought.
It’s not just Echo.
It’s everything.
Someone’s erasing black ops, old files, deep covers.”
“And what happens when they finish?” Lisa asked, fear creeping into her voice.
“They rewrite the story,” he said, his gaze hardening.
“And we’re the villains.”
“Then let’s give them a different ending.”
As dawn broke over the forest, Lisa stepped outside the helicopter, breathing deeply.
She was no longer just a waitress.
She was the last sentinel of a forgotten brotherhood, ready to rise from the ashes of her past and reclaim her destiny.
In that moment, she knew the battle was just beginning.
The world had forgotten Task Force Echo, but she would ensure they remembered.
