Without Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio Would’ve Taken Mark Wahlberg’s Offer Turning Down the Biggest Movie of His Career

Leonardo DiCaprio almost declined starring in Titanic as he considered joining another cult-classic movie that would have changed the course of his career.

A leading figure in Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio says he almost didn’t take the role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s Titanic.

He was considering another project that went to another A-lister, although in retrospect, this other option might have never launched his career the way Titanic did.

Call it kismet or divine intervention, but DiCaprio eventually chose the 1997 movie, which was the smartest decision he had ever made at the time.

He said that being paired with Kate Winslet reinforced his conviction to star in the film.

Leonardo DiCaprio almost rejected Titanic to star in Boogie Nights

He has come a long way in his career, but Leonardo DiCaprio always looks back at the time when he was still looking for that one project that would catapult him to stardom.

He knew James Cameron’s Titanic would be a success, but he did not expect it would go down in history.

In his conversation with The Sun (via Page Six), the 50-year-old veteran actor said he almost passed on the opportunity to play Jack Dawson.

Titanic? I would love to say I predicted it would be one of the biggest hits in film history. I didn’t — and wondered whether I should do it at all. I resisted it for a long time because I had been offered the film ‘Boogie Nights.’ The fact that Kate Winslet said ‘yes’ was the final decider.

Boogie Nights eventually went to Mark Wahlberg, the film that launched his career in Hollywood.

While the Boston native became highly sought after following his critical performance in this project, we can say that DiCaprio had more diverse roles and opportunities in Hollywood.

Still, it’s intriguing to see how the actor would give his own take on Dirk Diggler. After all, it’s a role quite unsuited for his boyish charm.

Wahlberg was indeed the perfect choice for the part since he’s got the street quality and a working-class background that would help build the character of a p*rn star.

The only question here is how DiCaprio’s career would have turned out had he picked Boogie Nights over Titanic.

It would also alter the chemistry of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater since Kate Winslet’s onscreen partnership with DiCaprio was unparalleled.

DiCaprio was more than happy to have become a part of one of the greatest films in history.

He’s aware of its lasting cultural impact and why people continue to watch it despite the many years that have passed.

It gave me so many opportunities, as an actor, to steer the course of my own destiny,” he told the same outlet.

The Oscar-winning actor revealed that being able to bring his mom and grandma to the worldwide premiere of Titanic was one of his proudest moments in life, and to have his family witness the role that made him an international star was truly priceless.

Titanic is currently available to watch on Disney+.
