Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are already on their next big project, and it is going to be a classic.

Speaking during an appearance on The Big Picture podcast, DiCaprio mentioned a conversation that he recently had with the director with whom he has been collaborating since 2002:

I’m working on a film where [Vertigo] is a reference point.

Had a conversation with Marty about it […] is she a ghost, or is she not a ghost? Is she there? Is he a ghost? So yeah, there’s something we’re working on that’s a reference to that.

Alfred Hitchcock‘s 1958 film, starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, is a cinematic experience that is simultaneously delightful and chilling.

The thriller has been hailed as Hitchcock’s masterpiece and is a transformative and extraordinary product of storytelling blended with cinematography.

With the added firepower of Scorsese’s direction and DiCaprio’s on-screen presence, a movie influenced by the best film that Hitchcock ever made is certainly going to be revolutionary, to say the least.

Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) is set to influence Martin Scorsese's next film.

In 2023, Deadline first reported Scorsese seemingly looking to adapt Peter Cameron’s What Happens at Night, a novel that examines the horrors of obsession and the blurring of lines between dream and reality.

Vertigo‘s themes are not too different compared to that, which would make sense for the 1958 classic to be considered as a reference point for Scorsese’s next project.

In a recent report, World of Reel highlighted the correlation and similarities between the two projects and how one might influence the other, claiming:

In Vertigo, Scottie’s fixation on Madeleine continues even after her death, leading him to remake another woman in her image.

In What Happens at Night, the husband’s anxieties over intimacy, fatherhood, and mortality distort his experience, blurring the line between dream and reality.

These are works about identity itself, and how unstable and vulnerable to desire and fear we can be.

While Scorsese has always been a master storyteller with an unflinching focus on human arcs set against the backdrop of a violent and unstable environment, the filmmaker is also known for dropping unwitting gems like Shutter Island and Cape Fear.

These neo-noir psychological thrillers prove that Scorsese is beyond qualified to deliver a masterpiece in horror, and What Happens At Night falls right under Scorsese’s area of expertise.

In World of Reel, the plot of Cameron’s 2020 novel is described as follows:

What Happens at Night follows an American couple who travel to a snowy European town to adopt a baby. They check into a vast, nearly deserted hotel populated by enigmatic figures: a flamboyant singer, a corrupt businessman, and a magnetic faith healer. As they fight to bring their child home, the strange world around them begins to unravel—and so does their understanding of themselves and their marriage.

The film will feature Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in lead roles as the American couple.

However, casting announcements for the chanteuse, businessman, and faith healer are yet to be made.

After collaborating on Killers of the Flower Moon, Apple Original Films is in negotiations to finance Scorsese’s upcoming movie, which Studiocanal is attached to produce.

Oscar-nominated screenplay writer Patrick Marber has already delivered the script, which will begin filming in 2026.
