When Oumuamua was first spotted hurtling through our solar system, it seemed like just another distant visitor from deep space.
The object, whose name comes from the Hawaiian word for “scout” or “messenger,” was the first confirmed interstellar object to pass through our solar system.
Its unusual shape, lack of a typical comet tail, and erratic behavior sparked intrigue among astronomers, but few could have predicted the unsettling revelations that would follow.

Comets are known to lose mass and release gas in bursts as they warm up, but Oumuamua didn’t exhibit the usual signs of this process.
The absence of a coma or tail meant that the acceleration couldn’t be explained by the release of gas or dust.
So, what could explain the object’s unusual movement? Some scientists, including Avi Loeb, a professor of astrophysics at Harvard University, have put forth a bold theory: Oumuamua might not be a natural object at all.
Loeb suggests that the object could be an alien probe or spacecraft, possibly sent to explore our solar system.
According to Loeb, the object’s acceleration could be explained by artificial propulsion or the use of sails powered by sunlight, something we’ve theorized about for deep space exploration but have never seen in action.
