New York Giants Owner John Mara Reveals He’s Been Diagnosed With Cancer

Mara said he’s “feeling strong and optimistic” after his diagnosis and plans to “remain active with the team”

John Mara has been diagnosed with cancer.

The New York Giants president and CEO, 70, shared his health update with the team, who announced the news across its social platforms on Monday, Sept. 29.

“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” Mara’s statement began.

“I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome,” Mara continued.

“I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support-personally, professionally, and medically.”

“I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time,” his statement concluded.

No further details regarding his diagnosis were shared.

The news of Mara’s diagnosis comes one day after the Giants earned their first win of the season with QB2 Jaxson Dart making his starting quarterback debut at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 28.

The rookie led the team to a 21-18 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mara became Giants owner in 2005. He is the third generation of his family to own the team.

He filled various roles for the franchise for 14 years prior, including executive vice president and chief operating officer.

This is his 20th season as the team’s chief executive.

The New York Giants were founded by Mara’s grandfather, Tim Mara, in 1925, making him the third generation of his family to own the team.

Mara has two Super Bowl titles as a co-owner of the New York Giants. He won Super Bowl XLII in the 2007 season and Super Bowl XLVI in the 2011 season.
