Before the world knew him as Cooper in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey portrayed the role of Agent Rustin “Rust” Cohle in the 2014 show, True Detective.

Portraying the role for only one season, the world has been waiting for McConaughey to return for another season of True Detectiveand in a recent interview, McConaughey finally gave an answer.

During his talks with NME, McConaughey revealed his condition to return to True Detective following the success of the recently released Apple Studios film, The Lost Bus.

There’s excitement, yes, but I haven’t seen a script yet.

When I [originally] read True Detective, everything that came out of Rust Cohle’s mouth was white-hot.

The script was on fire, so the execution [of a sequel] must go another step.

He continued,

We’re keen on the idea but it’s nothing more than an idea.

If Nic puts something on paper that Woody and I think is good enough, it wouldn’t even be a choice.

We would look at it and go, ‘it must happen’.

It’s gotta be damn good though because we set a pretty good precedent!

Following his big return in Hollywood with The Lost Bus, it took a great script to convince Matthew McConaughey to return to the fold.

Considering his statements about True Detective, it seems that McConaughey needs a great script above everything.

There are a plethora of things that fans are expecting with the potential return of Rust and Martin.

Although it’s rare for an anthology series to delve into the past, it is not impossible, especially considering the subtle nods to season one in True Detective: Night Country.

From the sharp dialogues to McConaughey’s philosophical ramblings, like “This place is like somebody’s memory of a town, and the memory is fading,” is what made season one so great, and the alleged sequel will have to make it better.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto has already written a story and even discussed it with the actors, and with the OG creator returning for a new season, you can expect the gritty realism and twisted tales of killers and cults, but on a much bigger scale.

Naturally, the return of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in True Detective is one of the most hyped-up topics in the fandom, and we expect nothing but the best… from the best.
