Veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most vocal celebrities in Hollywood. The Pulp Fiction actor is known for his strong stances on everything from art and cinema to politics. The legendary actor is known for no-filter and controversial opinions.

Jackson was a victim of alcohol and drug addiction in his earlier years, which he rectified after joining rehab in the 90s.

The actor claims that he has not had a drink ever since and still attends group meetings.

However, Jackson mentioned that he prefers the New York crowd over the Los Angeles ones as he feels the latter is too inauthentic.

Before his late breakthrough with Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, which earned Samuel L. Jackson an Academy Award nomination as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor, the actor was an up-and-coming actor who was still trying to find his big break.

The actor started his career on the stage and was part of the play The Piano Lessons.

Jackson started his acting career right after graduating from college, before which he was arrested for protesting in college.

He was part of the Black Power moment in his youth and was imprisoned along with Martin Luther King Sr. for protesting for reform in the Morehouse College administration and curriculum.

He was suspended from the college for two years, after which he returned to earn a degree in Drama.

Samuel L. Jackson reportedly started battling with drug and alcohol addiction right after college.

He was allegedly addicted to heroin and overdosed multiple times before switching to cocaine.

His addiction increased as he featured in a starring role in the play The Piano Lessons.

He checked into rehab after being discovered on the kitchen floor by his wife, a result of a drug binge after his replacement in The Piano Lessons, actor Charles Dutton was nominated for a Tony Award.

Jackson spoke about his life during this phase in an interview with The Guardian,

“It was all part of growing up in an extraordinary time.

That s*it helps you mature if you come through it and I’m here, right? Even the drugs and s*it – I came through. I turned myself around.”.

The actor has reportedly not touched a drink since he checked out of rehab, after which he played the role of a drug addict in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever.

It seems like Samuel L. Jackson has had his worst days behind him.

He has had a fifty-year career as an actor and was awarded the Academy Honorary Award for his contribution to cinema.

He is the third highest-grossing actor, with his films collectively earning over $14.3 billion worldwide.

The actor has long recovered since his days of addiction.

He mentioned in an interview with The Guardian that he had not had a drink since his days in rehab and still attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

He mentioned that he prefers the New York crowd over the Los Angeles crowd as he feels that the latter is inauthentic.

He said,

“It’s just too weird…In New York, rehab is for real. You sit next to guys who were IV users, guys who stole s*it, guys who sold their bodies. In Los Angeles, you’re sitting next to a guy who wants to go easy on the fine wine. Man, that’s a symptom of something right there.”

The actor went to a rehab clinic in New York during the pinnacle of his addiction and has been sober since.
