Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga has been a full-on, high-stakes poker game with the odds stacked against him.

After pouring $38M of his own fortune into the four-part Western saga, the first chapter stumbled at the box office.

And despite Costner’s hustle, the franchise’s future seems stuck in cinematic limbo.

The actor, who joked at Cannes about blockading yachts to squeeze checks out of billionaires, wasn’t kidding about the challenges.

Costner even mortgaged part of his California property to fund the project. Horizon Chapter 2 aired on Sept. 7, 2024.

Meanwhile, the third chapter reportedly started filming, but updates have been scarce.

He admitted,

No, no. I would love to have some mythical billionaire investor. I know what it’s like to gamble everything. I’ve gambled everything. Billionaires don’t gamble as much. But I’ve never found that kind of investor who says, ‘I believe in your American storytelling.’

So, what am I supposed to do? Wilt like a daisy? No. I just look to myself. I push it in the middle and don’t blink. The alternative is worse. That’s when you didn’t go for it, didn’t take a swing.

Costner continued,

You never know, so you’re swallowed up in thoughts about it. I’ll make sure my children are taken care of. I’ll make sure that some way, I’m fine. But this big pile I’ve made — it can’t be the thing holding me back.

Horizon chronicles the struggles of settlers in the late 1800s, a metaphor, perhaps, for Costner’s own uphill battle. But for the Yellowstone star, giving up isn’t an option, as he said:

I’m doing good. I constantly feel like I’m pushing that rock uphill, but I feel really lucky to know what it is I push. I’m lucky to know what I like to be about and what I like to do.
