Johnny Depp has been one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars; however, the box office hasn’t been too kind to him lately.
From Gellert Grindelwald to Captain Jack Sparrow, the man can pull off any character you throw at him, and how.
Unfortunately, keeping the franchise hits aside, the actor has only had one film that was a success at the box office in the last nine years.
In the last nine years, Depp has starred in a handful of movies, including his French debut, Jeanne du Barry (2023).
Three of these were franchise films: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018).
Keeping them aside, Depp has only had one film since 2016 that was a box office hit—Murder on the Orient Express (2017).
Made on a budget of $55 million, the film made $351 million at the box office.
While Alice Through the Looking Glass made $276 million, it is considered a box office flop given its $170 million production budget.

Depp’s depth is praised by critics and fans alike, but his box office performances seem to have suffered lately.

Based on Agatha Christie’s namesake book published in 1934, Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express was a good addition to the mystery genre.
While it received mixed reviews from critics, the star-studded ensemble and the faithful adaptation made up for what it lacks.
Talking about the story, Depp once had high praise for its relevance even today.
He said (via Philstar Global),
It’s got everything you might expect from Agatha Christie.
Death, murder, interesting characters, an unusual, often glamorous situation – all of those elements, inside a wonderful location and journey, are all there.
But I was really impressed to return to it and see how it hadn’t dated, and, in fact, it had reinvented itself, I think, which is a sign of very good storytelling.
Talking to Screen Slam, Depp claimed that projects like Murder on the Orient Express “translate to cinema so beautifully” as the author has already done most of the visual and character work.
Praising her further, Depp said, “I mean, the detail with which she approached her books and these characters, and her observations, it’s astonishing.”
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film is scored at 60%, while the audience gave it a lower score of 54%.
What’s Next For Johnny Depp in Hollywood?

Johnny Depp is currently filming for his next film, an action thriller by The Amazing Spider-Man director, Marc Webb.
Titled Day Drinker, the film will tell the story of a grieving private yacht bartender who comes across a mysterious day drinker, only for their lives to intertwine unexpectedly.
Day Drinker will mark Depp’s return to English-language movies in a major production after his heated courtroom battle against ex-wife Amber Heard.
The film also stars Penélope Cruz, Madelyn Cline, Manu Ríos, and more.
It’s written by Zach Dean, who has worked on projects like The Gorge and Deadfall.
Depp looked absolutely unrecognizable in the first look shared by Lionsgate on social media.
The actor ditched his wavy brown hair for a full gray beard and salt-and-pepper hair.
He also changed his eye color from brown to blue for the role:
Story, cast, director, writer – everything looks incredible so far.
Could Day Drinker be the film that takes Depp out of a box office slump when it comes to non-franchise projects?
