Of all the tragedies that Robert De Niro must have had to face in life, from losing roles to other stars to losing people in real life, his grandson’s unexpected death must have been among the most heart-wrenching ones.

Even more so since he lost him a mere 3 months after the birth of his seventh child, a daughter, Gia, with his girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

Leandro De Niro Rodriguez was one of the four grandchildren of the veteran Hollywood star.

He was the only grandchild that he had from Drena, who was his ex-wife Diahne Abbott’s daughter from her previous relationship, whom De Niro adopted after marrying Abbott.

In July 2023, it was announced that he had passed away at only 19.

One of the youngest stars in Hollywood with true talent running in his blood, Leandro De Niro Rodriguez was reported to have died in his late teen years as a result of a combination of multiple drugs.

He had famously starred in pieces like A Star Is Born (2018), Cabaret Maxime (2018), and The Collection (2005) before his untimely death.

According to CNN‘s reports received from the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office, the cause of his death was a toxic combination of fentanyl, which is deadly on its own, along with multiple other drugs, including bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine.

His demise was ruled an accident.

The deceased teen’s mother, Drena De Niro, clarified on social media about how her son had passed away, saying:

Someone sold him fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him so for all these people still f**king around selling and buying this sh*t, my son is gone forever.

However, a woman, Sofia Marks, was arrested in connection with Leandro’s death on a charge of selling drugs to a minor.

At the time, though, she was not charged with murder, as a source claimed to CNN.

Robert De Niro Shared a Heartbreaking Reaction to Leandro’s Death

His being the only grandson whom he had from his adopted daughter Drena, Robert De Niro shared a heartbreaking statement at the sudden demise of Leandro De Niro Rodriguez’s death.

As shared on @drenadeniro’s official Instagram handle, the actor-director’s statement read,

I’m deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo. We’re greatly appreciative of the condenses from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo.

Drena, in the meanwhile, said in her own statement, also shared in the same Instagram post:

“It is with immeasurable shock and sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved son Leo.

We thank you for the outpouring of love and support and ask that we are given privacy at this time to process this inconsolable grief.”

In another post, she dedicated an even more heartwrenching note to her beloved lost son, writing on her Instagram:

My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly. You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life. I wish I was with you right now.

I wish I was with you. I don’t know how to live without you but I’ll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama. You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you . I’m so sorry my baby. I’m so sorry. Rest in peace and eternal paradise my darling boy.

Drena De Niro shared Leandro with her artist partner, Carlos Rodriguez, who goes by Carlos Mare. He was their only child.
