Johnny Depp has been away from Hollywood for a long time.

After all the drama with his ex-wife Amber Heard, he was dropped from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as well as from Fantastic Beasts, leading to reports suggesting that he had sworn off Hollywood.

However, fans of the actor would be delighted to know that the actor is coming back to Tinsletown, and collaborating with his Pirates of the Caribbean love interest Penélope Cruz for an action thriller criminal mystery film.

While this does not mean that the actor would consider returning to his fan-favorite role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Disney should better sort their priorities and try to get him on board.

Johnny Depp has been away from action for a long time.

Ever since his much-publicized trial with Amber Heard the actor reportedly left Hollywood to focus on other things and even moved out of the country.

But, after years of keeping us waiting, the actor is finally coming back.

Collaborating with his Pirates of the Caribbean love interest Penélope Cruz, the actor will be starring alongside Cruz and Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline in an action thriller for Lionsgate.

Written by Zach Dean (Tomorrow War, Fast X) and directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man), the film will be a criminal mystery (via The Hollywood Reporter).

It will follow a cruise ship bartender who has a chance meeting with an enigmatic day drinker, with both finding themselves intertwined with a criminal underbelly and an unexpected connection.

Depp’s company In.2 will also produce the film, and this will mark Depp’s fourth collaboration with Cruz after BlowPirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.

Disney should get Johnny Depp back for Pirates of the Caribbean

It was in 2017 that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was released.

Since then there have been news and reports of two other Pirates films being in the work, with one of them starring Margot Robbie (see The Hollywood Reporter).

However, the films seem to be nowhere near development and fans have been awaiting news of a potential sequel for years.

While Pirates 6 is still said to be in development, there have been no substantial updates for a while now.

Moreover, it is not known whether the new Pirates will feature the old cast or a whole new roster of actors.

Given the appeal and popularity of the original movies, Disney would potentially fare way better if it brought the old cast back.

While Johnny Depp has not given any inclination of returning and was apparently pretty hurt when Disney dropped him, his return to Hollywood spells a ray of hope.

His role as Captain Jack Sparrow remains one of the main reasons why the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise became such a huge success.

So, Disney should better offer an Olive Branch and rope in the actor for fans’ consensus remains that if Johnny Depp wouldn’t be in a Pirates of the Caribbean film, it would not be a Pirates of the Caribbean movie at all.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is available to be streamed on Disney+.
