Yellowstone is a Western series that has left fans craving for more after each episode, which is no surprise because creative brains like Taylor Sheridan are at the helm of it.

But what elevated the show more was Kevin Costner’s commanding presence as John Dutton, who became a cultural phenomenon.

To watch the Dutton family saga unfold was such a treat because it was laced with drama, heartbreak, and battles for survival.

However, there was also a drama off-screen, one that led to Costner’s departure from the show, and here’s why we think that Sheridan might be deeply unhappy with this outcome.

Kevin Costner’s beautiful scene in Yellowstone: a moment of regret for Taylor Sheridan

In the first episode of Yellowstone’s fifth season, we see John Dutton interact with young Carter, played by Finn Little.

In their brief but hearty interaction, Dutton asks the young boy to stop growing so fast as it reminds him of his own agedness.

He says, “If you grow a beard, you’re fired.”

The scene turned out to be both humorous and poignant, a feat that only an actor of Kevin Costner’s caliber can accomplish.

He happened to be one of the best parts of the show, and to give him such a rushed exit seemed truly unfair.

But despite the unfavorable circumstances, Sheridan spoke highly of Costner in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered.

His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone

The aura that Costner embodied as the patriarch of the Dutton family is what set the bar high for the series.

So it’s natural that Taylor Sheridan, as the show creator, would be frustrated for not getting the time to do justice to Dutton’s arc.

Why Kevin Costner left Yellowstone: a collision of priorities

Kevin Costner’s early exit from the show was due to his ambitious project, Horizon: An American Saga.

He reportedly spent the past 35 years envisioning this Western epic, and now, he’s finally ready to bring it to life.

Costner had requested that his shooting for the remaining six episodes of Yellowstone be done in a week, but Paramount Network declined this request (via Good Housekeeping).

Even though this led to quite an unfortunate conclusion, Sheridan was still respectful while talking about it in the same interview.

My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct.

He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone.

I said, ‘We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],’ which we did.

However, the creator did go on to say that he was “disappointed” because Costner’s character’s end happened to be quite rushed, and not how he originally intended it to be.

But Sheridan has moved past it and is already steering the franchise in a new direction, with spin-offs and now stories.
