Sam Elliott, long celebrated as the embodiment of old-school Western charm, has always been the quiet, strong presence audiences trusted. With his unmistakable mustache and gravelly voice, he rode across screens delivering hard truths and embodying the rugged American cowboy. Yet behind that iconic image, life hasn’t always been smooth.

Recently, Elliott found himself at the center of controversy after an interview on the WTF Podcast with Marc Maron. There, he criticized the Oscar-winning film The Power of the Dog, calling it “a piece of rubbish” and questioning its portrayal of cowboys and the American West.

He expressed discomfort with the film’s themes of sexuality and took issue with director Jane Campion’s New Zealand background. “Why did she shoot the film in New Zealand and try to pass it off as Montana?” Elliott asked, arguing that to tell a story about the American frontier, one must understand and respect it.

His blunt comments ignited swift backlash. Campion responded by labeling Elliott’s remarks misogynistic, xenophobic, and homophobic, while Benedict Cumberbatch, the film’s star, spoke out against the notion that everyone must live a “normal” or straight life.

Fans and critics alike weighed in, with one viral video pointing out the fallacy in questioning a director’s authenticity based on origin and praising the film’s effort to add new layers to Western storytelling.

Realizing the gravity of his words, Elliott issued a heartfelt public apology at a Deadline event. “I wasn’t very articulate about it. I said some things that hurt people, and I feel terrible about that,” he said. He acknowledged the LGBTQ+ community’s support throughout his career and apologized directly to the film’s cast, especially Benedict Cumberbatch.

But controversy wasn’t the only challenge Elliott faced. In August 2023, false rumors of his death spread rapidly across social media and YouTube. Videos titled “Sam Elliott Tribute” and “Sam Elliott’s Last Goodbye” went viral, causing confusion and distress among fans.

These hoaxes originated from unreliable YouTube channels notorious for spreading celebrity death rumors. Despite the noise, Elliott remained very much alive and thriving, currently starring in Landman Season 2 on Paramount+, a series created by Taylor Sheridan, known for Yellowstone and 1883.

Elliott’s journey to stardom was far from easy. Born in Sacramento in 1944, he faced early hardships, including the loss of his father at 18. He left college and worked construction jobs before a chance visit to a film set sparked his acting career.

Starting with small roles, including a shadowy card player in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Elliott gradually built a reputation for his deep voice and authentic presence. Through the 1970s and 80s, he appeared in TV shows like Gunsmoke and Mission: Impossible, as well as Westerns like The Sacketts alongside Tom Selleck.

His breakthrough came with emotionally rich roles, such as in I Will Fight No More Forever (1975) and Lifeguard (1976). By the late 80s and 90s, he became a beloved character actor, known for films like Tombstone (1993), The Big Lebowski (1998), and We Were Soldiers (2002).

Elliott’s personal life is equally notable. He married actress Katharine Ross in 1984 after a long courtship. Their enduring relationship stands out in Hollywood for its steadiness and mutual respect.

Despite his fame, Elliott has remained grounded. He avoids social media, valuing real conversations over digital distractions. He’s candid about the casting couch culture he witnessed, choosing integrity over compromised success.
