On November 29, 1981, Wood was found drowned off the coast of Catalina Island, California, during a weekend boating trip aboard her husband Robert Wagner’s yacht, *Splendour*.

She had been accompanied by Wagner, her co-star Christopher Walken, and the yacht’s captain, Dennis Davern.

Initially, the Los Angeles County Coroner ruled her death an accidental drowning, citing her inability to swim and the presence of alcohol in her system.

However, over the years, questions arose regarding the circumstances of her death.

In 2011, Captain Davern publicly stated that he had lied to police during the initial investigation and that Wood and Wagner had argued on the night she disappeared.

This revelation led to the reopening of the case.

In 2012, the Los Angeles County Coroner amended Wood’s death certificate, changing the cause of death from “accidental drowning” to “drowning and other undetermined factors.”

The amended certificate noted that the circumstances of how Wood ended up in the water were “not clearly established.”

Further examination of the autopsy report revealed that Wood had several bruises on her body, including on her wrists, knees, and ankles.

Some of these bruises appeared to be fresh, suggesting they may have occurred before she entered the water.

Additionally, a scratch on her neck and a superficial scrape on her forehead were noted.

The coroner’s report indicated that these injuries could not be definitively explained by an accidental fall into the water.

Despite these findings, the investigation faced challenges due to the passage of time and the lack of direct evidence.

In 2018, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department named Robert Wagner a “person of interest” in the case.

However, by 2022, Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga announced that all leads in the case had been exhausted and that the case remained open and unsolved.

The death of Natalie Wood continues to be one of Hollywood’s most enduring mysteries.

While new information has emerged over the years, the true circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.

The case serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and challenges of investigating events that occurred decades ago.
