Sky Sports have made a decision on Gary Neville after his controversial “angry middle-aged white men” rant following the Synagogue attack in Heaton Park.

The former Manchester United defender, widely regarded as one of the best pundits in the game, hit the headlines this week for crossing the line during a political tirade on social media.

The 50-year-old sparked outrage over the weekend with a video posted on his LinkedIn account, criticising Britons who were fastening St George’s and Union Jack flags to lampposts across the country.

Neville, believed to earn around £1.1 million a year from Sky, also revealed that he had personally taken down a flag displayed at one of his building sites.

“I just kept thinking as I was driving home last night that we’re all being turned on each other,” the pundit said (watch the video below), “and the division that’s being created is absolutely disgusting.

Mainly created by angry, middle-aged white men, who know exactly what they’re doing.”

As some football supporters threatened to cancel their subscriptions over the incident, many believed Sky Sports would take action against Neville, who has long been outspoken on political issues.

However, according to the Telegraph on Monday, the pundit is not expected to face any punishment – despite the broadcaster having clear guidelines that govern their contributors’ personal channels. The guidelines state:

“Talent and contributors should be aware that social media communities are public forums and should not undertake activity that brings either the programme or Sky into disrepute.”

Former England teammate Matt Le Tissier was among those to raise questions over Neville’s comments, while talkSPORT host Simon Jordan called the retired right-back a “champagne socialist and a coward,” describing the combination as a “dreadful thing.” See the latter’s take on things below:

Neville will be hoping the situation cools down before the next Premier League weekend, when he will no doubt be a prominent voice covering Manchester United’s trip to Anfield to face arch-rivals Liverpool.

The international break delays that fixture, giving the pundit the perfect opportunity to hit the reset button and let the storm blow over.
