Rachel Maddow recently took aim at Elon Musk’s Tesla Cybertruck during a segment on her show, laughing openly as she mocked the vehicle’s performance issues and its growing reputation as a target of public ridicule.

Describing the situation as “almost too easy,” Maddow highlighted a trend on TikTok where users are projecting anti-Musk and anti-Cybertruck messages onto the vehicles’ tailgates.
She noted that the Cybertruck’s flat, metallic rear end acts “like a projector screen,” making it the perfect canvas for public mockery.
One of the viral messages featured on the trucks read, “No, the price of eggs aren’t falling, but the price of this piece of junk sure is.”
Another message beamed across the back of a Cybertruck read, “Hey, don’t hate me. Musk sold me this S-box.”
Maddow chuckled as she pointed out the increasingly personal tone of the jokes, saying, “There’s a bunch of these I should not show on TV. A bunch of them making crude jokes about what this big truck is compensating for.”
Her reaction was not just about the humor.

She also used the opportunity to revisit concerns over a proposed $400 million federal contract for Tesla to produce armored vehicles, a plan that drew public scrutiny due to Musk’s political activity.
Maddow previously suggested that Musk’s ties to political figures might influence contract decisions, though it was later clarified that the proposal originated under the Biden administration and was never finalized.
Still, the overlap between politics and business in Musk’s world continues to raise questions, and Maddow’s critical tone made it clear she sees the Cybertruck as another example of Musk’s overpromising and underdelivering.
The Cybertruck has faced delays, recalls, and mechanical issues since its long-awaited launch, and critics have pointed to these shortcomings as evidence that the vehicle was rushed or overhyped.
Maddow’s segment reflects a broader cultural shift, where Musk—once widely praised as an innovator—is increasingly viewed through a more skeptical lens by both the media and the public.
Her laughter wasn’t just about a sputtering truck; it was about what she sees as a pattern of grand ambitions crashing into reality.
As she closed the segment, Maddow remarked dryly, “It’s like performance art now. Except the performance is… the breakdown.”
