The royal life has always captivated the public, especially the untold stories behind the glittering curtains and the glory of the monarchy.
One of the questions that has puzzled many over the years is why Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, chose not to live with her at Buckingham Palace – the symbolic seat of royal power in the UK.
It wasn’t until after his passing in 2021 that their daughter, Princess Anne, finally broke the silence and revealed the truth behind that much-debated decision.
The love story of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip began like something out of a fairy tale, when they were both still very young.
Elizabeth was only 13 at the time, and Philip a dashing naval officer, but a strong connection between them began to take root early on.
They kept in touch through handwritten letters during the war, sharing passionate words and longing for the day they could be together.
When the war ended, Philip renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles, took on the Mountbatten name, and became the Duke of Edinburgh to marry Elizabeth in 1947.
However, after Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, their marriage began to face pressures that were far from visible to the public eye.
Behind the smiles and formal photographs lay a more complex reality.
Philip, who had sacrificed so much – his homeland, his royal status, even his surname – started to feel like an outsider in his own family.
He was never fully accepted by certain members of the royal family, especially Elizabeth’s mother, who reportedly called him “the Hun” due to his German heritage.
To make matters worse, he was not allowed to pass his surname to his children, which deeply wounded his pride.
Although Buckingham Palace served as the official royal residence and workplace, Philip never felt at home there.
To him, it symbolized the many things he had given up without receiving the respect or role he deserved in return.
His sense of purpose and influence waned, and over time, he began to withdraw emotionally.
Choosing not to move into Buckingham Palace was not a rebellious act, but rather a way for Philip to preserve what little autonomy and identity he had left.
Still, he remained a dutiful consort, always by the Queen’s side at public events and royal engagements.
But in 2017, at the age of 96, he made the final decision to retire to Sandringham, where he could enjoy the peace and privacy he craved.
He found solace in nature, away from the crowds, the handshakes, and the constant public scrutiny.
In a heartfelt interview with ITV after Philip’s passing, Princess Anne explained that her father did not leave the palace out of resentment or spite.
She stated simply that he had grown old and wanted a quiet place to live – one where he could walk around freely and not feel watched all the time.
She emphasized that it wasn’t about anger, but about the need for peace in his final years.
Princess Anne’s words offered a much-needed closure to years of speculation.
They revealed a man who, after a lifetime of service and self-sacrifice, simply wanted to spend his final days on his own terms.
Though physically apart in his later years, the love and respect between him and Queen Elizabeth never faded.
Their story remains a poignant reminder that even in the most public of lives, personal choices and quiet dignity still matter deeply.
