On April 26, 2025, the funeral of Pope Francis took place at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, drawing hundreds of thousands of faithful and dignitaries from around the world.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke and facing serious health complications.

The funeral was conducted according to his wishes—humble and simple in nature.

The burial ceremony was led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re and attended by more than 130 international delegations, including 50 heads of state and 12 monarchs.

Among the notable figures present were U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and many other global leaders who came to pay their final respects to a pope known for his commitment to the poor and marginalized.

In a poignant gesture, a group of homeless individuals and people in need were given the honor of accompanying the Pope’s coffin, symbolizing his lifelong dedication to social justice.

In the days leading up to the funeral, from April 23 to 25, over 128,000 people visited the late Pope’s body lying in state at St. Peter’s Basilica.

To ensure the safety of the attendees, Italian authorities deployed more than 2,500 police officers and 1,500 soldiers, along with fighter jets and advanced surveillance systems.

Following the ceremony, Pope Francis’s remains were taken to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial, as he had requested a modest and unpretentious final resting place.
