College issues statement after NYU President is forced to resign over ‘inappropriate’ Barron Trump remark

New York University has issued an official statement this week after College Republicans president Kaya Walker resigned following a series of controversial remarks she made about Barron Trump.

The 18-year-old son of US president Donald Trump and wife Melania has attended the institution since May 2024, following his graduation from Florida’s Oxbridge Academy, and still studies business at NYU’s Stern School of Business.

Last week (12 Feb), however, Barron was the victim of a number of ‘inappropriate’ comments made by the educational facility’s College Republicans president about his mannerisms on campus.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Walker described the student – who is the youngest of the 78-year-old Republican president’s five children – as ‘sort of like an oddity on campus’.

She added that Barron ‘goes to class, he goes home’.

Walker also told the publication that one of her professors had joked recently that the teenager ‘doesn’t belong here’, referencing the fact that NYU is widely considered a left-leaning institution.

The outlet also spoke with one of Barron’s classmates, who reported recounted an anecdote about the president’s son asking to play basketball with him.

The student recalled that Barron seemed interested, but that he’d gotten the sense at the time that ‘he wasn’t really allowed to do stuff’, being under the watchful eye of Secret Service officers.

After facing backlash for her comments, it was announced last week that Walker had left her position at NYU.

A statement from the College Republicans of America (CRA) has since issued a statement on her resignation.

“In light of recent reports concerning the President of our New York University (NYU) chapter, College Republicans of America (CRA) wishes to address the situation directly,” the message began.

“We have been made aware of a statement made by the NYU chapter President that does not align with the values and principles upheld by our organisation.”

Accusing Vanity Fair of ‘unfairly framing what was said’, the CRA noted: “Upon review, we still found it to be inappropriate. The NYU chapter President submitted her resignation last night.”

The statement, posted to X on Monday (17 February), went on to state: “CRA broke with 100 years of precedent when we endorsed President Trump, being the first national College Republican organisation to endorse a candidate before the beginning of the primary season.

“CRA proceeded to make more than one million voter contacts throughout the primary and general elections, sending hundreds of our students wherever the Trump campaign needed them.

In response to recent events with our NYU chapter, College Republicans of America formally invites Barron Trump to join us in reshaping the Republican Party.

“Our support for President Trump is, and has been, a pillar of our organisation.”

The statement also shared that president of the CRA, Will Donahue, was ‘extending an invitation to join CRA to the President’s son’.

“Barron Trump represents the future of the conservative movement, and we would be honoured to have him join College Republicans of America,” Donahue said.

“Strong leadership is built on resilience, courage, and the humility to rise above petty hostility – qualities that Barron has already demonstrated. We invite Barron to join us in shaping the future of our party.”

Other than Barron, who he shares with Melania, Trump is father to four other children from two more marriages; Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump with Ivana Trump, as well as Tiffany Trump with Marla Maples.
