The Mission Ranch resort in Carmel, California, held a foggy, dreary past tainted by war and negligence before Eastwood valiantly rode in to save the day, creating a haven out of the tattered wallpapers and broken windows. Now it is a picturesque resort thriving near one of  Eastwood’s first homes in Quail Meadow.

To recreate the history of the Mission Ranch, we have to retrace the steps back to the 18th century when Carmel’s history was written in coalesce with the Spanish, Mexican, American, and Native American counterparts. In 1771, Carmel became the spiritual centre of Alta California when Mission San Carlos Borroméo del Río Carmelo was built. This history explains the Spanish colonial influences that are still preserved in this context.

Clint Eastwood’s most impactful property – the Carmel Mission Ranch farmhouse was first built in the 1850s by a Scottish couple, Elizabeth and John Martin.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region witnessed a surge of artists and writers taking refuge in Carmel, and Robert Louis Stevenson was one among them. He was bewitched and inspired by the scenery, eventually making the Point Lobos and the view from the – now Clint Eastwood’s resort- Mission Ranch as the setting for his popular novel: Treasure Island.

In 1986, when a developer ploughed in to demolish the history of the area to build clusters of condominiums, Clint Eastwood swooped in as a member of the community and neighbour to acquire and rebuild the twenty-two acres. He transformed it into a humble resort and abode for tourists.

In the 1920s, Clarence Tantau, a prominent San Francisco architect, designed the home, showcasing his Spanish Farmhouse style with thick adobe walls, terracotta roof tiles, hand-crafted ironwork, and iconic Spanish doors.

The house is oriented around a central courtyard adorned with oak trees and a fountain. The interiors, spanning 6,900 square feet, feature a great room with beamed ceilings and breathtaking ocean views, a formal dining room renowned for hosting iconic dinner parties for artists, authors, dignitaries, and musicians from around the world, as well as six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

The term Tehama is used in the context of Clint Eastwood’s houses and properties to refer to the private, gated neighbourhood and golf club in Carmel, California.

Clint Eastwood envisioned the development of Tehama, an exceptional town situated in the hills above Carmel-by-the-Sea on California’s Central Coast, to prevent the rapid urbanization of his beloved land. Striving for balance, Eastwood opted to build a limited number of houses, ensuring the preservation of the region’s unique character. The summer of 2023 marks the listing of the last Tehama lots, a significant step that will firmly establish Eastwood’s distinctive legacy in the area.

Regarding this ambitious project, Clint Eastwood said, “We thought someone might take the land and turn it into a much more congested area or just not take care of it.” (Eastwood, 2023) He further said that he read the future lifestyle of people might require their privacy as well as space.

Unfolding across 2,000 acres of rolling hills above Monterey Bay, Tehama is planned to encompass a total of 90 lots, with 60 lots already purchased and 30 homes constructed, including one owned by Eastwood. This unique community preserves 85 per cent of the land as untouched, pristine wilderness. Residents in this vast landscape can interact with native species such as deer, fox, turkey, and quail.

Notably, donning heels higher than two inches necessitates a special permit, underscoring the commitment to maintaining the town’s unconventional ambience. While the area around Monterey hasn’t seen a significant influx of A-listers as property owners, Clint Eastwood finds solace in Tehama, making it his chosen refuge away from the urban hustle.
