ABBA’s Benny Andersson FINALLY CONFIRMS The Awful Rumors
After years of speculation and whispered conversations among fans, Benny Andersson of ABBA has finally broken his silence and confirmed the rumors that have long haunted the legacy of the legendary Swedish pop group.
In a candid and emotionally charged interview, Benny did not shy away from the difficult truths that have lingered in the shadows since ABBA’s meteoric rise in the 1970s and their complex relationships offstage.
Speaking with a quiet intensity, Benny admitted that the internal tensions within the group were far more serious than the public ever knew.
While ABBA’s polished image and infectious melodies dominated charts around the world, behind the scenes, personal struggles were taking a toll.
“We kept going for the sake of the music, for the fans, and maybe also because we didn’t know how to stop,” Benny said.
“But yes, things were falling apart.”
He confirmed that the emotional strain between the two couples — Benny and Anni-Frid, Björn and Agnetha — wasn’t just a footnote in ABBA’s story.
It was a driving force behind many of their most poignant songs.
“Those weren’t just lyrics,” he explained.
“We were living those words. Heartbreak, regret, anger… it was all real.”
Benny also addressed the persistent rumors that the band’s breakup in the early 1980s was not as amicable as it had been portrayed.
“There were a lot of things left unsaid at the time. We didn’t want to drag our private lives into the spotlight, but it wasn’t some graceful ending. It was painful. It hurt all of us deeply.”
For the first time, he acknowledged that at several points in the late ’70s, he considered leaving the group altogether.
“There were nights I couldn’t sleep. I’d be at the piano, trying to write, and nothing would come because everything just felt heavy. The joy had started to fade.”
One of the most difficult truths Benny confirmed was the emotional toll fame had taken on Agnetha, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight in the years since ABBA disbanded.
“She struggled more than most people realize,” he said, his voice noticeably softer.
“She never liked the constant attention. It drained her. And looking back, we should have protected her more.”
Benny emphasized that he does not regret ABBA or their legacy, but he now feels a responsibility to be honest about what they endured.
“There’s no sense in pretending anymore. We made beautiful music, yes — but we also made mistakes. We hurt each other. That’s part of the story too.”
He was also clear that despite recent reunions and the launch of the ABBA Voyage project, their days as a performing group are definitively over.
“We’ve said what we wanted to say musically. The rest of our lives is about reflection, not reinvention.”
As he spoke, there was no bitterness — only a sense of closure, and perhaps even a quiet kind of peace.
“ABBA gave us everything, and it also cost us something,” Benny said.
“But that’s life. Nothing this beautiful comes without a price.”
For fans who grew up with ABBA’s music as the soundtrack to their lives, Benny’s honesty adds a new layer of depth to the songs they’ve always loved.
And while the truth may be difficult, it also makes the story — and the music — all the more human.
