In Mac’s case, the tumor had likely been growing since birth, silently progressing until it became painful and debilitating.

The diagnosis was devastating: chordoma is notoriously difficult to treat, with no effective drug therapies available, and often requires complex, high-risk surgeries.

Mac underwent his first major surgery in September 2018 to remove the tumor.

Despite the initial hope, the cancer returned and spread along his spine, necessitating multiple surgeries in 2020 — including thoracic and cervical spinal fusions that left him increasingly disabled.

The surgeries involved rods and screws from the top of his spine down to his thoracic region, severely limiting his mobility.

He became paralyzed from the chest down, confined to a wheelchair and hospital bed for much of the time.

Throughout this grueling ordeal, Mac’s spirit remained unbroken.

They kept it from me.

Mac was working on it quietly.

None of us had heard it until that day.”

Sadly, Mac’s health continued to decline, and he passed away on January 5, 2024, just days after completing his album Resurrection and Revival.

Gary has since dedicated himself to preserving and promoting Mac’s musical legacy, producing a second album, Resurrection Revival Part Two, and working tirelessly to ensure that Mac’s compositions are heard by a wider audience.

His mission is fueled by love and the desire to honor his son’s gift.

The emotional weight of caring for Mac led Gary to make a difficult decision: to step back from his acting career in 2019.

He explains how he told his agents and managers that he could no longer commit to roles that required extended time away from home.

His focus shifted entirely to caregiving, supporting Mac through surgeries, treatments, and the day-to-day realities of living with cancer.
