Trent McDuffie’s Contract Standoff: Will the Chiefs’ Star Cornerback Play for a Future or a Fortune?

The Kansas City Chiefs are entering the new NFL season with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over one of their star players.

Trent McDuffie, the team’s top cornerback and a two-time All-Pro, is expected to start the season without a multiyear contract extension.

Sources have indicated that despite several discussions over the past six weeks, the Chiefs and McDuffie have not reached an agreement ahead of their season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo this Friday.

Trent McDuffie contract projection: Cornerback market has already shifted up on the Chiefs

At just 24 years old, McDuffie has established himself as the Chiefs’ second-best defender, trailing only pass rusher Chris Jones.

As he prepares for his fourth NFL season, McDuffie acknowledged the reality of his situation before practice on Sunday.

“I’m not too worried about the contract,” he said.

“That can just happen in the [next] offseason. Let’s just go out there and have a great year.”

McDuffie’s confidence stems from a breakout 2022 season, where he recorded career highs with two interceptions and 13 pass breakups, alongside 59 tackles, four quarterback hits, and one forced fumble.

His impressive coverage skills and durability were evident as he played 996 defensive snaps, demonstrating his ability to line up close to opposing receivers.

In fact, McDuffie was in press-man coverage on a league-leading 63.5% of his snaps last season, showcasing his skills as a top-tier cornerback.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has acknowledged the importance of McDuffie’s role on the team.

“We definitely have had dialogue,” he stated last week.

“He’s a guy that’s obviously a special player. We’re going to continue that dialogue, and hopefully something gets worked out. I think things have been good. Trent is obviously going to be a priority.”

However, the negotiations have been complicated by recent contracts signed by other top cornerbacks.

How Skilled Is Chiefs' Trent McDuffie?

In July, the New York Jets secured Sauce Gardner, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 draft, with a record-setting four-year, $120.4 million extension, which included $85.653 million guaranteed.

For the Chiefs to sign McDuffie to an extension before the season, the terms would have needed to exceed Gardner’s deal, making McDuffie the highest-paid cornerback in the league.

McDuffie represents a significant investment for Veach, as he is the highest draft pick of his tenure as general manager, which began in 2017.

The Chiefs selected McDuffie with the first of their two first-round picks in the 2022 draft, following the blockbuster trade of Tyreek Hill.

Since entering the league out of Washington, McDuffie has been a starter, contributing to the Chiefs’ recent success, including back-to-back Super Bowl championships and a third consecutive appearance in the title game last season.

The 2022 draft class, which featured key contributors like defensive end George Karlaftis, running back Isiah Pacheco, safety Bryan Cook, linebacker Leo Chenal, and cornerback Jaylen Watson, has played a vital role in solidifying the Chiefs’ dynasty.

In the postseason, McDuffie has continued to shine, producing 13 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery over 10 games.

Earlier this year, the Chiefs exercised the fifth-year option in McDuffie’s contract, guaranteeing his 2026 salary at $13.6 million.

“I love being a Chief,” McDuffie said in late July, expressing his commitment to the team.

“I know the contract stuff will come.”

As the season opener approaches, Veach has indicated that the Chiefs are open to continuing negotiations with McDuffie throughout the season.

If the discussions do not progress, the Chiefs may consider placing the franchise tag on McDuffie in 2027, which would prevent him from entering unrestricted free agency and would limit him to a one-year deal.

This year’s franchise tag for a cornerback is set at $20.186 million, a substantial figure that underscores the value of top-tier cornerbacks in the league.

As the Chiefs prepare to kick off their season, all eyes will be on McDuffie as he takes the field against the Chargers.

While the contract situation remains unresolved, McDuffie’s focus is clear: to perform at his best and help lead the Chiefs to victory.

The coming weeks will be critical, not only for McDuffie’s performance but also for the future of his contract negotiations.

As the season unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this situation develops, and whether McDuffie can solidify his status as one of the league’s elite cornerbacks while navigating the complexities of contract talks.
