Jauan Jennings Stays Put: 49ers GM John Lynch Shuts Down Trade Speculation!

The San Francisco 49ers are facing a critical juncture as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season, and one player at the center of attention is wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

While uncertainty looms over whether Jennings will be ready to play in Week 1, General Manager John Lynch has unequivocally stated that the team has no intention of trading him.

Jennings’ situation has been complicated since he left practice on the fourth day of training camp due to a calf injury.

His status for the season has become a major talking point, and Lynch, along with head coach Kyle Shanahan, addressed the media on Wednesday to provide some clarity.

According to Lynch, Jennings had requested a trade “a while ago,” but the 49ers are not entertaining that request.

“He asked for it and we’ve moved on,” Lynch said firmly.

“We’re not doing that. So, we’re moving forward.”

This statement underscores the team’s commitment to Jennings, despite the challenges they face with their receiving corps.

Entering the final season of the two-year contract extension he signed in 2024, Jennings is set to count $4.258 million against this year’s salary cap, with over $8 million in dead money remaining from previous void years.

Reports earlier in July indicated that Jennings was seeking a lucrative contract extension or a trade if that was not forthcoming.

He did report to training camp on time and participated in the first four practices before his calf injury sidelined him.

Lynch acknowledged that both Jennings’ injury and his desire for a new contract are valid concerns.

“Both things can be true,” he stated, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.

Since his injury on July 27, Jennings has not practiced, and with the regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks approaching on September 7, the urgency to get him back on the field is palpable.

“Ideally, everybody has a training camp, everyone is out there,” Lynch noted.

“That’s a perfect world, but he’s been putting in work to the side, and we’ll have to make that judgment when the time comes.”

This highlights the team’s hope that Jennings can recover quickly and contribute to the offense in the early part of the season.

To this point, the 49ers have opted to let Jennings play out the final year of his contract, although adjustments to his remaining deal could still be on the table.

The franchise has shown a willingness to invest in their receiving corps, having signed wideout Brandon Aiyuk to a substantial contract extension last August and using a first-round pick on Ricky Pearsall in 2024.

Shanahan addressed Jennings’ contract desires, stating that he doesn’t view them negatively.

“I don’t think that has anything to do with team chemistry,” he said.

“That doesn’t have anything to do with how we approach each other, how we spend our time with each other.

That has to do with business decisions and the business decisions people make.

I don’t look at any of that stuff.”

As the 49ers navigate this situation, there is a pressing need to get Jennings healthy and back on the field.

Following the initial roster cuts to 53 players, the team found itself with just two healthy receivers, Pearsall and Skyy Moore, among the five on their depth chart.

In response to the injury challenges, the 49ers have been proactive, signing veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year deal and planning to activate Russell Gage Jr. after releasing him earlier in the week.

This flurry of activity illustrates the urgency the team feels to bolster their receiving options as the season approaches.

“Jauan is still working through his calf issue, making progress,” Lynch said.

“We’re kind of like everyone else, hopeful but not sure on Week 1, and we’ll proceed as such.”

The 49ers also placed wideout Jacob Cowing on injured reserve due to a hamstring issue and re-signed punter Thomas Morstead after claiming defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
