From Super Bowl to Baby Names: How Chiefs Fans Honor Mahomes and Kelce with Their Sons

In a heartwarming twist of fate, two lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fans, Kaytee Wood and her husband, Alex, have chosen to honor their favorite football players by naming their sons after them.

The couple’s first son, Patrick, was born during the weekend of the 2020 Super Bowl, where the Chiefs triumphed over the San Francisco 49ers.

All in a name: Chiefs fans name sons after Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce

This momentous occasion set the stage for a family tradition that would carry on with the birth of their second son, Travis, in 2023.

Kaytee recounts the promise her husband made during that Super Bowl weekend, which ultimately led to their son being named Patrick after the Chiefs’ star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

“He made a lot of promises and said a lot of things, and we just decided to go with it,” she explained.

“Luckily, we also really loved the name.”

Fast forward to 2023, and the couple welcomed their second son.

When it came to naming him, there was no debate—Travis was the clear choice, honoring Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

“Everybody asked, ‘Are you gonna name him Travis?’” Wood recalled.

“We went back and forth for a really long time. We actually didn’t decide until he was born, but we decided to go with Travis.”

Now, at the ages of 4 and 2, Patrick and Travis Wood are still too young to fully understand the significance of their names.

However, their mother has high hopes for their future, wishing for them to emulate the strong bond shared between Mahomes and Kelce on the field.

“I hope my boys end up having the bond that Patrick and Travis do on the field,” Wood shared.

Patrick and Travis Wood, now 4 and 2, don’t have any interest in playing football yet, but if...

“That’s kind of why we decided to name them as two best friends because we want them to grow up to be best friends.”

Interestingly, while the boys currently show no interest in playing football, their parents are ready to support them should they choose to pursue the sport.

“If they don’t want to play football, that’s OK, too,” Kaytee said, emphasizing the importance of allowing her children to follow their own passions.

One of the most delightful aspects of naming their sons Patrick and Travis is the joy it brings during the football season.

The boys frequently hear their names mentioned on television, which adds a layer of excitement to their lives.

Additionally, the family enjoys being recognized as dedicated Chiefs fans, even though they live outside of Kansas City.

“It’s kind of like an Easter egg,” Kaytee explained.

“People definitely ask, ‘Really? Are they named after the Chiefs?’ But the people that know us well get it.”

With both sons born in years when the Chiefs made significant playoff runs, Kaytee has playfully suggested to her husband that they should have a third child and name him Andy, after the beloved coach Andy Reid.

Her reasoning? To bring the team some extra luck.

However, her husband has yet to be convinced.

As the family continues to embrace their love for the Chiefs, they embody the spirit of fandom in a unique and personal way.

Patrick and Travis Wood may not yet grasp the depth of their names, but they are part of a legacy that celebrates teamwork, friendship, and the thrill of the game.

As the football season approaches, the Wood family will undoubtedly be cheering on their favorite team, with their sons proudly bearing the names of two of the NFL’s brightest stars.

Whether or not they choose to follow in their namesakes’ footsteps remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: their parents will be there to support them every step of the way, no matter what path they choose.
