Cardi B Triumphs in $24 Million Assault Lawsuit: A Battle of Wits and Words
A Los Angeles jury has cleared Cardi B of assault accusations from a security guard that originally sued her for $24 million over the alleged attack, as reported by Rolling Stone.
The verdict, delivered after a highly publicized trial, marks a significant victory for the Grammy-winning rapper, who faced intense scrutiny throughout the proceedings.
After the verdict was announced, Cardi spoke to the press outside of the courthouse and expressed her relief, noting that it has been “really tough” to deal with the case in the middle of her album rollout.
She shared the emotional toll the situation took on her, revealing that she even missed her kids’ first day of school on Tuesday due to the trial.
“The next person to try to do a frivolous lawsuit against me, I’m going to counter sue and I’m going to make you pay, because this is not okay,” she declared, adding, “People have this misinterpretation of celebrities, like, ‘Oh, well, we can ask for this, and they’re going to settle…’ Don’t you ever think that you’re going to sue me and I’m just going to settle and just give you my money. It’s not going to happen.”
The case centered around an incident involving Emani Ellis, who alleged that Cardi cut her face with her fingernail outside an obstetrician’s office in 2018.
The trial sparked national attention and generated numerous viral memes, thanks to Cardi’s behavior during the proceedings, including her fiery one-liners and bold fashion choices both on the stand and outside the courthouse.
Cardi claimed that Ellis followed and filmed her in the doctor’s office without her permission, leading to a heated “debate,” as she described it.
It’s worth noting that Cardi was pregnant at the time, adding another layer of complexity to the emotional atmosphere surrounding the trial.
In her original complaint, Ellis accused Cardi of attacking her, spitting on her, and using “racial slurs” against her.
However, as the trial commenced, Ellis’ lawyer, Ron Rosen Janfaza, confirmed that his client had dropped the claims relating to her being fired from her job due to the incident.
Janfaza also stated that Ellis had stopped demanding the full $24 million and was now seeking compensation for her medical expenses along with a lesser amount of $250,000.
“She was abused. She was harmed. She was assaulted and battered by Cardi B, and Cardi B needs to pay for that,” Janfaza reportedly said in court on Tuesday, emphasizing the emotional weight of the allegations.
While on the witness stand, Ellis claimed she called out Cardi’s name upon seeing her in the doctor’s office that day.
She insisted she was not talking to anyone on the phone and that she never recorded Cardi.
“[Cardi] was extremely upset,” Ellis testified, according to a report from Rolling Stone. “She put her finger in my face. I was deeply traumatized about what happened.”
On Cardi’s part, she accused Ellis of “invading” her privacy.
“Now, we’re like chest to chest,” she described the confrontation. “I’m thinking to myself, this girl is big. She’s got big black boots on. I’m like, damn, what the hell am I going to do now? She’s literally right in my face, like, on my chest, and we’re arguing, I’m telling her to back up. And she’s not backing up.”
Cardi recounted to the jury how their back-and-forth developed into a shouting match where she used explicit language.
“Bitch, get the fuck out of my face,” she recalled saying during the altercation.
Still, Cardi was adamant that the “verbal altercation” did not lead to any physical contact.
“She didn’t hit me. I didn’t hit her. There was no touch,” she stated firmly on the stand, reinforcing her position throughout the trial.
As the dust settles from the trial, Cardi is set to release her highly anticipated sophomore album, “Am I the Drama?,” on September 19.
With the legal battle behind her, she can now focus on her music and reconnecting with her family.
Cardi’s experience in the courtroom has ignited discussions about the nature of celebrity lawsuits and the often blurred lines between personal and public life.
Her determination to fight back against what she perceives as frivolous claims is a testament to her resilience in the face of adversity.
Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how this experience influences Cardi’s artistry and public persona.
With her upcoming album, fans are eagerly awaiting to see if her legal battles find their way into her music, adding yet another layer to her already complex narrative.
In the end, Cardi B’s triumph in this lawsuit serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by public figures and the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity.
As she continues to navigate the tumultuous waters of fame, one thing is clear: Cardi B is not going down without a fight.
